The Heroine’s Journey of Angela Brown

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

I started my own house cleaning company 24 years ago and it has allowed me to be my own boss, work flexible hours, choose the people I want to work with, and be responsible for my own earning power.

What is my idea of perfect happiness?

Happiness for me is being present in the moment. Making everything I do count for something. Asking myself in any moment: Right now is awesome because _____________ and then I try to fill in the blank. It’s a lovely game in which I always win.

What is my greatest fear?

This is the toughest question for me because I’m not aware that I’m afraid of, or fear anything. If something challenges me, it becomes a stepping stone, rather than a stumbling block. I figure out a way to resolve it, to work around it, to incorporate it into my progress. I am fearless.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

I’m cautious and take calculated risks. I avoid situations that I don’t have complete control over – that could malfunction. I am afraid that one day I will look back on my life and wish I had gone hang gliding, downhill skiing or jumped out of an airplane.

What is my greatest extravagance?

Two and a half hours of uninterrupted time with myself every morning. I get up at 5:00 am and drive to the gym. I listen to business podcasts on the ride there and back. This is food for my mind. While at the gym I swim, run and lift weights – this strengthens my body. Then I sit in the hot tub for 15 minutes which is a deep therapeutic massage, while meditating and planning my day. When I arrive at work at 8:00 my body, mind and soul have already been nourished.

On what occasion would I lie?

I believe in honesty and I’m a “tell it like it is” kind of gal. An occasion where I would lie is to protect someone from the truth. I know a man who is cheating on his wife, but to tell his wife and children would destroy his family. I will let him tell them when he is ready. It’s none of my business, and to say something would only cause harm.

What is the influence of role models, in my work and in my life?

I am the sum total of all the people I’ve met. I don’t have one role model. I believe that everybody has something to offer. I observe others and borrow their best qualities, talents, and ideas and make them my own.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

I dislike the anticipation of the work itself. Especially if I’m working with a difficult client. I always prepare myself for the worst – and the worst usually never happens.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

The happiest I’ve been in my work is deciding to love what I do. At first I didn’t love cleaning houses, but I love the fact that I am my own boss, and can work my own hours. I love the fact that my job pays my bills. And I love my clients. Choosing to love my work has made this the best job I’ll ever have.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

I ask myself this question every morning. During the day I make a conscious effort to change the things I want to change. I have the power to change and so I do.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

I just wrote and published a book teaching house cleaners how to start their own house cleaning businesses. and am following it with an online training program to continue their business success.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?

Colonel Francis Beatty Park – Charlotte – It is a 265-acre public park with a big lake. Lots of people go there for kayaking, fishing and canoeing. I go there to hike and mountain bike on the trails that loop around the lake. It also has basketball courts, soccer fields, horseshoe pits, indoor and outdoor picnic shelters.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?

There is a Hibachi Grill in Matthews NC. It is an all-you-can-eat-buffet with fresh sushi, fresh hibachi food grilled in front of you, plus a HUGE salad bar. The buffet offers dozens of prepared dishes, a fresh fruit bar and yummy desserts. Lots of fun for everyone and the food is always fresh, hot and tasty.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

My husband Patrick. He’s been supportive of my entrepreneurial pursuits. He listens without judging and allows me the room to grow as a business person. He doesn’t chide me when I make mistakes, and he’s the first to celebrate my wins. I wouldn’t be where I am without him.

Whom would I like to work with in the future?

There is a group of women I’ve discovered online, who offer the same services to House Cleaners I offer. I would love to figure out a way to collaborate with them, rather than compete with them. We all have different strengths. I feel together we would make an amazing team.

What project, in the nearby future, am I looking forward to work on?

I’m in the homestretch of creating an online university for independent house cleaners. I’ve combined 24 years of experience into the lessons, and am extremely proud of how it is turning out. It will be a top notch program once it’s released.
