The Heroine’s Journey of Dominique Cozette

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The surprise it gives me when it is finished because it’s always different from all I could believe in starting it. Specially concerning the novels I write.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? I’m not a fan of perfection, I guess it can be boring. I appreciate small or great moments of happiness as if it could end. Happiness is like the sun : we are happy when it shines and we are hopefull when it’s cloudy.

What is my greatest fear? The end with no rewind.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself ? Lazyness or procrastination. I’ve got a lot of ideas, I write them and I wait, I wait, I wait. I’m acting as if I had eternity to achieve all that.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Many. In plastician art, I love the work of Sophie Calle because she produces a huge work of art with her own life. I like when artists create around their lives, like Anaïs Nin in literature. I like artists like Agnès Varda (film maker, photo, plasticien…) who can create new things despite their age.

What is my greatest extravagance? When I was young, I used to sing with my sister, my guitar and my harmonica in front of Salvador Dali during fiestas in Port Lligat. He seemed to enjoy it !

On what occasion would I lie? I’m a bad liar. It’s funnier to tell the truth as if it were a lie !

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I don’t like when it takes too much time to be done. I loose part of my spontaneity and the result does not satisfy me.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I work, I’m always happy : before, when looking for THE idea, during the process, and after, when it is finished.

If I could, what would I change about myself? Maybe to be more bold, less polite or shy.

What is my greatest achievement in work? It gives meaning to life. I think that creation is the most marvellous activity (even if my work isn’t so marvellous).

Where would I most like to live? Here in Paris, where I live. New-York can be great too. I love big cities.

What is my most treasured possession? My Macbook : all I do, think, make, write, draw is inside of it. If I loose it, I loose all. (But I use to save all my work).

What is my most marked characteristic ? Irony, caustic humor.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Everywhere. I enjoy walking in little streets or avenues, taking the metro, sitting in « bistros », looking at people. I enjoy visiting galleries or looking at all sorts of books in bookshops and libraries.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Little restaurants named « bistros », with terraces or not, not too modern in Le Marais, or old brasseries in Saint Germain des Prés (I dislike Starbucks, for example).

What books influenced my life and how? My school books because I was happy to learn new things and sometimes, they were so boring !

Who are my favorite writers? I read a lot and like a lot of writers : Fante, Jim Harrisson, Irving Yalom, Duras, Perec, Zweig…

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Maybe rock’n roll : Elvis in the beginnig. And joyful singers as Charles Trenet, Jacques Higelin. Or surely Gainsbourg. And Coltrane.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? The heroines created by Claire Bretecher, they are so funny, so ironic, so near me ! Or Crumb with all the stories about of himself, wife…

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? The whistleblowers. All of them. They’re courageous, they fearless and they’re often not rewarded fot what they do. In France, Denis Robert is one of them. He fought against Clearstream, a big company, during 10 years, all alone. At the end, he won all the court cases but for nothing, the company had changed.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Le Mépris by Jean-Luc Godard with Brigitte Bardot. Flew over a cuckoo’s nest. West Side Story. Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. A lot, lot, lot.

What role plays art in my life and work? The same as the air, the water, the sun : it is necessary, essential, indispensable. It makes life bigger than dreams.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Friends, daughter, husband.

Whom would I like to work with in 2017? Write, draw, think, are solitary activities. I like that, to be alone in front of a canvas or a white page…

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2017 ? When I meet an artist or a writer, I don’t know what to say, except « I like what you do » which is not very smart. But if a curator or an editor could accept to distribute my work, it would be great.

What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on? I have three projets : a novel, a graphic novel and a theatre play…

Where can you see me or my work in 2017? For the moment in the Internet : website : dominiquecozette.com blog : http://www.cozette.org

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? It means that passion is a part of life, like blood, heart, brain. Unless one becomes sick, passion is the engine of life.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Catherine Ursin (plastician) : http://ursin.uniterre.com/ Moni Grego (theater, writer) : http://www.m-e-l.fr/moni-grego,ec,511
