The Heroine’s Journey of Aude Carbone

What is the best thing that I love about my work ?

Something absolutely priceless : I am my own boss. I do things as I decide it. I’m an illustrator, publisher and silkscreen printer, I’m 100% independent.

That means I am my own slave too. But when I have the feeling that I don’t have the choice to do something, I remember it is the result of another choice I made before.

What is my idea of perfect happiness ?

Today I live my life doing what I want and being myself. I have got the support of peolple I love.

When finally my activities will allow me to only live with and from my creations, then it will be perfect happiness.

I am very close though…

What is my greatest fear ?

Human stupidity.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself ?

I’d love to be more social.

I feel badly disconnected from the rest of human beings sometimes.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire ?

Pakito Bolino, who drives a workshop and a publishing house for 25 years now. He’s learnt me silkscreen printing and help me a lot at the very beginning of my publishing house.

And more generally, all the other people driving workshops too, who I can compare myself to, and who gives me self-confidence just by their energy and their belief in what they do.

What is my greatest extravagance ?

Three-quarters of my skin are covered with tattoos. And I do not intend to stop.

On what occasion would I lie ?

I am very bad at lying, I’m too naive for that. I believe what I’m told and I say what I think. I cannot imagine any relationship based on lies, I try to evolve in a transparent and friendly sphere.

To say that I never lied would be a lie though, but i do it for anecdotal matters / things, with people I won’t meet anymore.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work ?

Hard question when you love what you do !

Silkscreen printing is a very long process including a lot of steps. You can know all of them by heart, and be able to do them eyes closed, sometimes for some unknown reasons, everything goes wrong in the workshop, and whatever you do, the best is to stop everything and start again the day after. This can be really frustrating !

When and where was I the happiest, in my work ?

I think that was when I got my own silkscreen printing workshop built and ready to work, at the end of 2016. I had been working on a tarot deck project for two years, a set of cards I designed. And I couldn’t wait anymore to print it. Big project to start with ! It was my first publishing I entirely made by myself.

If I could, what would I change about myself ?

I draw and make illustrations for ever but I discovered silkscreen printing lately. My years of study have been chaotic and even if everything was really interesting, none of them have been really converging. I would like to live again these 5 or 7 years to focus on the learningship of printing processes and art techniques.

What is my greatest achievement in work ?

I’m completely autodidact in my work. So each time I discover or learn new techniques or new tips by myself, it makes my day !

Where would I most like to live ?

It’s gonna sounds like a kind of dream but I would like to live in a place where there would be enough room to live comfortably and to build a proper printing workshop where all materials and machines could fit ; not to far from the city, but surrounded by nature too, in order to place a big window in front of the drawing desk, baring a large view on mountains.

What is my most treasured possession ?

My hands.

What is my most marked characteristic ?

When I’ve got an idea, I stick to it.

When I decide something is gonna happen this way, there’s no mean it happens another way.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city ?

My drawing desk.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city ?

Sorry to disappoint you, but I live in a little little village, up the mountains in the french countryside without pub, nor restaurant, just a lot of nature. I often go to town for work though, but I can’t get used to only one place to eat and drink !

What books influenced my life and how ?

Le Bleu Du Ciel, from Georges Bataille, definitely.

I certainly  read this book whereas I was too young. I read it three times and though the memory I have of this novel is very blurred, but I know it changed my life. I was just coming out of a protective and protected youth, and I discovered a dark raw world with crude and disillusioned characters, full of sexual disorders but finally just true, seeking themselves. When you’re a teenager, it’s the perfect comparison.

Who are my favorite writers ?

I don’t know if I have favorite writers, but some authors I really enjoyed reading are Franz Kafka, Georges Bataille, Christine Angot, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jean Giono, Philip K. Dick…

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day ?

I listen to a lot of down tempo electronical music or rock stoner, something without lyrics that makes my thoughts travel and gives me a rhythm when I work. I wouldn’t like it to change on my last day I think.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction ?

Daria, from the cartoon serie. She’s so cynic.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life ?

I have a lot of admiration for people who look like they can’t run out of energy and good mood, who fight every day to defend their choices and work to make their dreams come true. They are an endless source of inspiration and motivation.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime ?

This question is certainly the one I took the longest time to answer !

But after a century of reflection, I would say the David Fincher’s movie « Fight Club ». I am not incredibly original, but this movie is deeply subversive as well as being an exciting psychological thriller. You can’t stay the same after watching it.

What role plays art in my life and work ?

Well, I wake up, live, sleep and dream with it. I spend my mornings drawing, and my afternoons and evenings working for my publishing house, looking for new places to exhibit my productions or new artists to publish or work with. So art doesn’t have just a rôle, it’s a motor.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime ?

It’s gonna sound soooo overdone but it’s just true : my boyfriend.

He’s always proposing me some help, supporting me when I lose faith and he is really present.

Whom would I like to work with in 2019 ?

I would find really funny to start making illustrations for B horror movies jackets, ahaha !

Searching for jobs like that nowadays.

Concerning my work with the publishing house, I’ve got an eye on plenty of artists I would like to publish, but I keep the list secret…

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2019 ?

Well, even if I need to be really organised in my profession because everything takes time and need to be planned a long time before, I believe in spontaneous encounters and fate. I love travelling through my country and further to discover how people work in other workshops and that only happens when you don’t expect it !

What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on ?

I’m actually preparing an exhibition in Brussel for May of next year. It represents hundreds of hours of drawing to make this new serie of illustrations, and hours of printing for new art posters. I really can’t wait to build the exhibition and see the result of more than 1 year of backstage work !

Where can you see me or my work ?

Places where you can meet me are very variable, depending on where exhibitions and book fairs take place.

The best is that you follow these links : for exhibitions

and this one : for book fairs.

You can of course see a lot of my work on these websites.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me ?

It means that whatever happens in my life, passion is always here, nourished by all these little or big, good or bad, happy or sad things that come on my way. And the older I get, the bigger becomes my passion.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story ?

The list of women I know who should tell their story could be never-ending ! But at the moment, I’m very fond of the work of Laura Schneider (Freshmilkart), Zélie Doffémont, Anne van der Linden, Audrey Faury, Alice « Pole Ka », Sarah Fisthole…
