The Heroine’s Journey of Maribel Oca

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

Stability. Love. Complicity. Family. Calm

What is my greatest fear?

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

I admire the anonymous architects, who with generally, with a very little Budget, create beautiful and unknown works, those things that unexpectedly surprise you in some corner.

What is my greatest extravagance?

Maybe this one! talk about me, about my work … in a language that I do not control! There are many things that almost nobody does, and when I do it for the first time, look like extravagant (like swimming naked, walking barefoot in the street, singing without good voice, hugging a stranger) then they become part of my daily way of being.

On what occasion would I lie?

ufff … I’m a failure in that! I blush! Although I also blush when I tell a truth that bothers me answer. I prefer to say the truth or shut up. Maybe I would lie to save my children from something, a short lie, without getting involved in frills or explanations.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

I think I do not degrade anything. May be….get up early! The rest I like everything.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

Whenever I create. It is fascinating to see the thought come true. Many professionals intervene in the execution of a work and each one feels a bit the same when seeing it done, but for me it is special, that jumps from my head to the paper and then to reality is inexplicable, it is full satisfaction.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

The shyness that prevents me from letting go in situations where I really want to do it. I would like to Improve the Managing of the limits, with others and with myself. Know how to say no to others, and also to myself.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

Choose it. I have been working in various places throughout my professional career and, except for one that was of necessity, the rest were by choice, because something mobilized me. How it moves me to face a project that I do not even know where to start. The challenges.

Close to my affections. I am very emotional. No matter the place. It’s important to be close to who I love.

Resilience and ability to get out of any hole. And my smile, of course!

I live in barcelona. Without a doubt, it is the sea.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?

A square in my neighborhood, pedestrian, flirtatious. There is a small place, good dishes, and excellent treatment. Loving.

What books influenced my life and how?

Many … but there was one that made me learn. “The conspiracy of fools” by John Kennedy Toole. I was interested at first, but it was very difficult to finish, it was very heavy. I finished it. It was inspiring not to do some things again that I do not want to do. With people and emotions it continues to cost me.

Who are my favorite writers?

My two children, without a doubt! They like to write to both. They express feelings and emotions in texts of incredible depth. I love reading them.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?

“Sobreviviré” (I will survive ) by Mónica Naranjo, it’s the first topic that came to my mind.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?

I can not think of any.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?

Again, as in the professional field, I admire all those anonimos that improve the day, or the life, of another without exposing it. And I thrill.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?

“Tiempo de Valientes” (time of brave men) by Damián Szifrón, with Diego Peretti and Luis Luque.

What role plays art in my life and work?

Art invades my life. Increasingly. It is not only because of my profession, architecture, or my current work, lighting. Is present in my hobbies; I paint, ceramic model, yew .., in my moments of introspection in which I write …, it is present in my house, in my choices, in my fun; I love watching contemporary dance, listening to live music…

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

My best fans are my parents, my children, my current love, some of the past … My accomplices have been, and are my colleagues. My sponsors, my bosses, when I have had them, I have always enjoyed full trust in me.

Whom would I like to work with in 2019?

More than with whom, with what, or in what? I would like to continue working with the light, it is very inspiring.

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2019?

I would like life surprise me in that.

What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on?

More than in a project, it is in a dream. There is a little house that I have always liked in my neighborhood. I cant buy it, in fact I do not even think it’s for sale. It has a decadent air that I love. I would like to be able to reform it to live in it.

Where can you see me or my work in 2019?

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?

Passion not only moves my work, it moves my life. The process is not always good, but it always gives me life. Passion will retire when I die, not when I stop working. The passion grows. The passion makes me start again. Passion gives me and demands me.

Here follows a message of Peter de Kuster, founder of the Heroine’s Journey

botticelli-primavera

The Heroine’s Journey is a private tour in story rich venues of world cities with Peter de Kuster, to rewrite the story you tell yourself about yourself and your creative work and in the process transform your life and business.

What is your Story?

“Your story is your life,” says Peter. As human beings, we continually tell ourselves stories — of success or failure; of power or victimhood; stories that endure for an hour, or a day, or an entire lifetime. We have stories about ourselves, our creative business, our customers ; about what we want and what we’re capable of achieving. Yet, while our stories profoundly affect how others see us and we see ourselves, too few of us even recognize that we’re telling stories, or what they are, or that we can change them — and, in turn, transform our very destinies.

Telling ourselves stories provides structure and direction as we navigate life’s challenges and opportunities, and helps us interpret our goals and skills. Stories make sense of chaos; they organize our many divergent experiences into a coherent thread; they shape our entire reality. And far too many of our stories, says Peter, are dysfunctional, in need of serious editing. First, he asks you to answer the question, “In which areas of my life is it clear that I cannot achieve my goals with the story I’ve got?” He then shows you how to create new, reality-based stories that inspire you to action, and take you where you want to go both in your work and personal life.

Our capacity to tell stories is one of our profoundest gifts. Peter’s approach to creating deeply engaging stories will give you the tools to wield the power of storytelling and forever change your business and personal life.
