My name is Rosaria Cascio, I’m a literature teacher and I live in Palermo. I grew up with Fr. Pino Puglisi, the priest from Palermo killed by the mafia for his commitment to young people. I have written many books about him and I travel around Italian schools and cities talking about him and his method.
What is the best thing I love about my work? I’m a literature teacher. I love the subject I teach, Italian and History. And I try to make my students understand this. If I can do it, they’ll love my subjects too. I love being an example to them, I love leaving a mark that will stay with them forever. I love being myself because teaching is, first of all, being consistent.
What is my idea of happiness? To feel good about yourself. A balance that is difficult to achieve and always to regain. But happiness is harmony, it is measure. It requires a continuous and constant effort because happiness is never an end point. Happiness is the path to achieve it.
What is my greatest fear? That someone will suffer for me. I don’t have other great fears, I am serene compared to what I am doing and the way I am doing it. I believe that each of us has a task in our lives. For me, more than a fear, it’s a commitment to fulfill it. I want to be able to fully achieve my goals.
What is it that I deplore most in myself? My life is full of activities and commitments. I take everything I do seriously and this leads me to be strict with myself. Sometimes, this aspect of my character leads me to make so many commitments at the same time that, however, I want to fulfill them to the best of my ability.
Which people living in my profession do I admire the most? Consistent people, those who are serious and loyal, people who know how to be witnesses to the values in which they believe. They are the best people I try to inspire myself.
What is my greatest extravagance? There is one aspect of my character that I have always cultivated: making others happy. I try to make my students happy when I teach. I believe that teaching by having fun helps students to learn in a relaxed and serene way. And so I often joke and alternate moments of cheerfulness and lightheartedness with moments of commitment.
On what occasion should I lie? Maybe if the truth hurts. But I never like lying and I try not to. A truth that is difficult to accept must always be told even if you can do it by softening it, smoothing out the hardest parts.
What’s the one thing I don’t like most about my work? I love my job, I love everything, even meetings and parent meetings. I love less the superficiality of colleagues when it comes to making important decisions for a pupil.
When and where have I been the happiest in my job? With my pupils I always try to put into practice the teachings I received from Fr. Pino Puglisi, the Palermo priest killed by the Mafia in 1993. I was his pupil and he taught me the importance of listening. Now that I am a teacher, I also listen a lot to the students through writing. So, with two classes, I published two books in which the guys tell their adolescence. I have transcribed one of these two books into a play that we have staged in many Italian theatres. Those were moments of great happiness for having shown everyone the beauty of being a teacher and a pupil according to Fr. Puglisi’s educational method.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Laziness sometimes leads me to neglect friends I’d like to devote much more time to. But I often let myself be overcome by tiredness or the need to finish a job I have started and so, in the end, I dedicate little time to friendship.
What is my greatest success at work? Teaching is not a job for me, but a passion. That’s why when I teach I always try to give my best. Being able to create meaningful relationships with my students is the way I teach Italian and history. If meaningful relationships are established, the kids learn better and they try harder. Each of their successes is, for me, a personal success.
Where would I most like to live? In a place that doesn’t exist but has the climate of Sicily, the beauty of Palermo and the administrative efficiency of a European capital. In a place like this, I would work even harder to make it better.
What is my most precious possession? My serenity that I have earned, over the years, thanks to my personal commitment and sharing my serenity with the people I love.
What is my most marked characteristic? I think I’m a person who is available to everyone, sunny and sensitive. I like taking care of others and I can’t sleep peacefully if, during the day, I haven’t been able to give a hand to someone who has asked me for help.
What is my most exciting place in my city? My city, Palermo, has always been a place where I have worked hard. During the 90s, when the magistrates Falcone and Borsellino were killed and then with the killing of Fr. Puglisi, I committed myself on the front line against the mafia. I have participated in many meetings with other citizens of Palermo to fight the mafia. They were fantastic years, even if painful, but I gave my contribution to make my city better. And my commitment always continues
What’s my favorite place to eat and drink in my town? I don’t like to eat out but, if I have to choose a stimulating and relaxing place, I always go to the Mondello seafront, the beach of Palermo. Enjoying a nice ice cream, even in winter, in front of the sea… it has a special taste!
Which books have influenced my life and how? I started reading with passion from the age of 18 onwards. And the passion for reading was born thanks to Luigi Pirandello’s books. The study of personality, of the human soul, of human relations, are my favourite subjects. I also loved Banana Yoshimoto’s writing a lot. Today I really love reading essays about the mafia, pedagogy and novels…
You only die once. What music would I listen to on my last day? No music. If I knew I had to die on a specific day, I’d listen to an ambient background music and lie down in front of the sea…
Who’s my hero or heroine in fiction? I love Italian cinema very much but I don’t have a favourite actor. I have a lot of fun in the films of Alberto Sordi and Verdone and I loved Monica Vitti a lot.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Simple men and women who live their lives with loyalty and a sense of responsibility, the real mistakes are those people who know few people because they work in silence.
What movie would I recommend we see once in a lifetime? I couldn’t recommend one, but I would certainly recommend cinema as a tool for knowledge of reality. That’s why the films that I would recommend are those that deal with true stories, because I really appreciate the educational and formative value of the cinematographic language
What role does art play in my life and work? I’m not a big fan of art, that’s my limit, I know, and I’m also very ignorant. But I’m moved by the sense of measure of classical works, both sculpture and painting.
What do the words “You’re the storyteller of your own life” say to me? That’s right! We write the script of our own lives at the same time we live. I don’t believe people who say they have to live a certain way, it’s not like that. There’s always a moment when we have to choose. And choosing not to choose, unfortunately for many, is already a choice for which we are personally responsible.
Who is my biggest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My whole family, my parents, my grandchildren. They always follow me during my public meetings and share my work on social networks. They are, for me, a great support.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020? I have written many books about p. Puglisi and others about fiction. I have published them thanks to important publishers who have greatly appreciated my work. But the book I have in mind, the next one, I would like to spread it more strongly, thanks to an important publisher.
Which people in my profession who can really make a difference in my creative career would I like to meet in 2020? I don’t have any specific names to say. Every year that starts I think about which projects to carry out, which ideas to develop and then… by chance I meet someone I didn’t think I could do something with and, instead, we build a project together. I like this way of working a lot more, I don’t like planning in advance
What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to working on? I’ve been working, for some years, on a book on the pedagogy of p.Puglisi in contrast to the mafia. An important commitment, of study and research and then writing. My second passion is the web and site building. For several years now I have been making websites in a professional way, but I am now starting to study wordpress and, to do so, I have created a website that concerns me: http://www.rosariacascio.it. Finally, another interest that I’m developing is the creation of video documents to be used in many contexts.
My first productions were booktrailers of my books. New languages to express content I believe in!

With two different classes I wrote two books that we took around the schools in Italy. One of these books became a play that we staged in some Italian theaters, making wonderful experiences all documented on the web.
What do the words “Passion never retires” mean to me? Teaching, for me, is just that: to leave a mark inside, to be a witness of values, to share life. It’s not a job even if you need competence and professionalism to teach. But it is one of those jobs that have a strong dose of human relationships and, therefore, it is not possible to do it without passion. It is not taught from 8 to 13 but always, organizing lessons, educational outings, dedicating time to children and listening to their difficulties. For this reason it is not only a job but much more and to do it you need a continuous passion.
Which creative heroines should invite Pietro to tell their story? Maristella Panepinto: a journalist who founded an online newspaper and, without financial aid, took it to high levels. Alessandro Gallo. A writer, screenwriter, theatre actor. Son of a camorrista, he built his life without following in his father’s footsteps. Today he lives in Bologna where he works in schools with legality projects. Salvo Ognibene. A young writer from Menfi who founded a beautiful experiential tourism business in Sicily.

Mi chiamo Rosaria Cascio, sono un’insegnante di lettere e vivo a Palermo. Sono cresciuta con p.Pino Puglisi, il sacerdote palermitano ucciso dalla mafia per il suo impegno con i giovani. Su di lui ho scritto molti libri e giro per le scuole e le città italiane a parlare di lui e del suo metodo.
Qual è la cosa migliore che amo del mio lavoro? Io sono un’insegnante di lettere. Amo la materia che insegno, Italiano e Storia. E questo cerco di farlo comprendere dai miei alunni. Se riesco a farlo, anche loro ameranno le mie materie. Amo essere un esempio per loro, amo lasciare un segno che resterà per sempre nella loro vita. Amo essere me stessa perchè insegnare è, prima di tutto, essere coerenti.
Qual è la mia idea di felicità? Stare bene con sé stessi. Un equilibrio difficile da raggiungere e sempre da riconquistare. Ma la felicità è armonia, è misura. Richiede uno sforzo continuo e costante perchè la felicità con è mai un punto di arrivo. Felicità è il percorso per raggiungerla.
Qual è la mia più grande paura? Che qualcuno soffra per me. Non ho altre grandi paure, sono serena rispetto a quanto sto facendo ed al modo in cui lo sto facendo. Credo che ognuno di noi abbia un compito nella sua vita. Per me, più che una paura, è un impegno riuscire ad assolverlo. Voglio riuscire a raggiungere sino in fondo i miei obiettivi.
Qual è il tratto che deploro di più in me stesso? La mia vita è pienissima di attività e di impegni. Prendo sul serio tutto quello che faccio e questo mi porta ad essere anche severa con me stessa. A volte, questo aspetto del mio carattere, mi porta a prendere tanti impegni contemporaneamente che, però, voglio assolvere al meglio.
Quali persone viventi nella mia professione ammiro di più? Le persone coerenti, quelle serie e leali, le persone che sanno essere testimoni dei valori in cui credono. Sono le persone migliori alle quali cerco di ispirarmi anch’io.
Qual è la mia più grande stravaganza? C’è un aspetto del mio carattere che ho sempre coltivato: rendere felici gli altri. Cerco di rendere felici i miei alunni, quando insegno. Credo che insegnare divertendo aiuti gli alunni ad apprendere in modo rilassato e sereno. Ed allora spesso scherzo ed alterno momenti di allegria e spensieratezza a momenti di impegno.
In quale occasione dovrei mentire? Forse se la verità fa male. Ma a me non piace mai mentire e cerco di non farlo. Una verità difficile da accettare va detta sempre anche se si può farlo addolcendola, smussando le parti più dure.
Qual è la cosa che non mi piace di più del mio lavoro? Amo il mio lavoro, amo tutto, persino le riunioni e gli incontri con i genitori. Amo meno la superficialità dei colleghi quando bisogna prendere decisioni importanti per un alunno.
Quando e dove sono stato il più felice, nel mio lavoro? Con i miei alunni cerco sempre di mettere in pratica gli insegnamenti che ho ricevuto da p.Pino Puglisi, il prete di Palermo ucciso dalla mafia nel 1993. Sono stata sua allieva e mi ha insegnato l’importanza dell’ascolto. Adesso che sono insegnante, ascolto moltissimo gli alunni anche attraverso la scrittura. Con due classi, così, ho pubblicato due libri in cui i ragazzi raccontano la loro adolescenza. Uno di questi due libri l’ho trascritto in spettacolo teatrale che abbiamo portato in scena in molti teatri italiani. Quelli sono stati momenti di grande felicità per avere mostrato a tutti la bellezza di essere insegnante e alunni secondo il metodo educativo di p. Puglisi
Se potessi, cosa cambierei di me stesso? La pigrizia, a volte, mi porta a trascurare gli amici ai quali vorrei dedicare molto più tempo. Ma spesso mi faccio vincere dalla stanchezza o dal bisogno di finire un lavoro iniziato e così, alla fine, dedico poco tempo alle relazioni di amicizia.
?Qual è il mio più grande successo nel lavoro? Insegnare non è un lavoro, per me ma una passione. Per questo quando insegno cerco sempre di dare il massimo. Riuscire a creare relazioni significative con i miei alunni è il modo in cui insegno italiano e storia. Se si stabiliscono legami significativi, i ragazzi apprendono meglio e si impegnano di più. Ogni loro successo è, per me, un successo personale.
Dove mi piacerebbe di più vivere? In un posto che non esiste ma che abbia il clima della Sicilia, la bellezza di Palermo e l’efficienza amministrativa di una capitale europea. In uno posto così mi impegnerei ancora di più per renderlo migliore.
Qual è il mio possesso più prezioso? La mia serenità che mi sono conquistata, negli anni, grazie al mio personale impegno ed alla condivisione della mia serenità con le persone che amo.
Qual è la mia caratteristica più marcata? Credo di essere una personale disponibile con tutti, solare e sensibile. Mi piace prendermi cura degli altri e non riesco a dormire tranquillamente se, nel corso della giornata, non sono riuscita a dare una mano a qualcuno che mi ha chiesto aiuto
Qual è la mia posizione più stimolante, nella mia città? La mia città, Palermo, è stata sempre un luogo in cui mi sono impegnata al massimo. Durante gli anni 90, quando furono uccisi i magistrati Falcone e Borsellino e poi con l’uccisione di p. Puglisi, mi sono impegnata in prima linea contro la mafia. Ho partecipato a molti incontri con altri cittadini di Palermo per contrastare la mafia. Sono stati anni fantastici anche se dolorosi ma ho dato il mio contributo per rendere la mia città migliore. Ed il mio impegno continua sempre
Qual è il mio posto preferito dove mangiare e bere nella mia città? Non amo mangiare fuori casa ma, se devo scegliere un posto stimolante e rilassante, vado sempre sul lungomare di Mondello, la spiaggia di Palermo. Gustare un bel gelato, anche in inverno, davanti al mare… ha un sapore speciale!
Quali libri hanno influenzato la mia vita e come? Ho iniziato a leggere con passione dai 18 anni in poi. E la passione per la lettura è nata grazie ai libri di Luigi Pirandello. Lo studio della personalità, dell’animo umano, delle relazioni umane, sono gli argomenti che preferisco. Ho amato molto anche la scrittura di Banana Yoshimoto. Oggi amo molto leggere saggi sulla mafia, sulla pedagogia e romanzi
Muori solo una volta. Quale musica ascolterei il mio ultimo giorno? Nessuna musica. Se sapessi di dovere morire in un giorno preciso, ascolterei un sottofondo ambient e mi sdraierei di fronte al mare
Chi è il mio eroe o eroina nella finzione? Amo molto il cinema italiano ma non ho un attore preferito. Mi divertono tanto i film di Alberto Sordi, di Verdone ed ho amato molto Monica Vitti
Chi sono i miei eroi ed eroine nella vita reale? Gli uomini e le donne semplici che vivono con lealtà e senso di responsabilità la propria vita, i veri errori sono quelle persone che conoscono in pochi perché operano nel silenzio
Quale film consiglierei di vedere una volta nella vita? Non saprei consigliarne uno ma consiglio di sicuro il cinema come strumento di conoscenza della realtà. Per questo i film che consiglierei sono quelli che trattano storie vere, perché apprezzo molto il valore educativo e formativo del linguaggio cinematografico
Che ruolo gioca l’arte nella mia vita e nel mio lavoro? Non sono una grande appassionata di arte, è un mio limite, lo so, e sono anche molto ignorante. Però mi commuove il senso di misura delle opere classiche, sia la scultura che la pittura
Cosa mi dicono le parole “You are the storyteller of your own life”? È così! Siamo noi stessi a scrivere il copione della nostra vita, nello stesso momento in cui viviamo. Non credo a chi dice di essere costretto a vivere in un certo modo, non è così. C’è sempre un momento in cui siamo chiamati a scegliere. E scegliere di non scegliere, purtroppo per molti, è giá una scelta di cui siamo personalmente responsabili.
Chi è il mio più grande fan, sponsor, partner nel crimine? La mia famiglia intera, i miei genitori, i miei nipoti. Mi seguono sempre durante i miei incontri pubblici e condividono sui social i miei lavori. Sono, per me, un grandissimo sostegno.
Con quali persone o aziende mi piacerebbe lavorare nel 2020? Ho scritto tanti libri su p. Puglisi ed altri di narrativa. Li ho pubblicati grazie ad editori importanti che hanno apprezzato molto il mio lavoro. Ma il libro che ho in mente, il prossimo, vorrei diffonderlo con più forza, grazie ad un editore importante.
Quali persone nella mia professione che possono fare davvero la differenza nella mia carriera creativa mi piacerebbe incontrare nel 2020? non ho dei nomi precisi da fare. Ogni anno che inizia penso a quali progetti portare avanti, a quali idee sviluppare e poi…. casualmente incontro qualcuno con cui non pensavo di potere fare qualcosa e, invece, costruiamo insieme un progetto. Mi piace molto di più questo modo di lavorare, non amo programmare in anticipo
Su quale progetto, nel 2020, non vedo l’ora di lavorare? Sto lavorando, da alcuni anni, ad un libro sulla pedagogia di p.Puglisi in contrasto a quella mafiosa. Un impegno importante, di studio e di ricerca e poi di stesura.
La mia seconda passione è il web e la costruzione di siti. Ormai da diversi anni realizzo siti web in modo professionale ma sto iniziando adesso a studiare wordpress e, per farlo, ho dato vita ad un sito che mi riguarda: www.rosariacascio.it
Infine, un altro interesse che sto sviluppando è la realizzazione di video documenti da utilizzare in tanti contesti. Le mie prime produzioni sono stati i booktrailer dei miei libri. Linguaggi nuovi per esprimere contenuti in cui credo!

Cosa significano per me le parole “Passion Never Retires”? Insegnare, per me, è proprio questo: lasciare un segno dentro, essere testimone di valori, condividere la vita. Non è un mestiere anche se per insegnare occorre competenza e professionalità. Ma è uno di quei lavori che hanno una forte dose di relazione umana e, quindi, non è possibile svolgerlo senza passione. Non si insegna dalle 8 alle 13 ma sempre, organizzando lezioni, uscite didattiche, dedicando tempo ai ragazzi ed all’ascolto delle loro difficoltà. Per questo non è soltanto un lavoro ma molto di più e per svolgerlo occorre una passione continua.
