The Heroine’s Journey of Shivangini Rathore

What is the best thing that I love about my work?  Being a designer, I love to create and I have already fallen in love with every bit of it. Playing with colors is like an everyday activity and I love what I do. Nature is my major source of inspiration. Being surrounded by Sky, Moon,Clouds, Stars, Flowers and birds all the time is like a privilege in today’s world. It is therapeutic and yes, nature never fails to surprise me with it’s beauty. So, staying connected to nature is the best part.

What is my idea of happiness?  Happiness is a very personal thing and it is different for every individual. It is only when you experiences the negative emotions you will be able to understand happiness better. Life is full of different emotions and each one of them is important. For me living in the moment is happiness. Sometimes happiness is there and sometimes it isn’t and being okay with it is the biggest form of happiness. I believe in embracing all my emotions and that too is happiness.

What is my greatest fear? I fear for the day when I loose my creativity. I may loose anything in my life but my creativity. I have learned a lot and I want to continue learning and dreaming with the help of this beautiful mind.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? One is that I am a restless soul and sometimes lack patience, another is that I get bored with things very easily. I am working upon changing these two things in me.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? I admire fearless and responsible designers and artists who make eco-friendly products like Anita Lal & Simran Lal (founder of indian brand GoodEarth), Anuj Sharma (founder of Button Masala) Kirti Tula (founder of brand Doodlage), Preeti Verma (founder of brand Runway Bicycle) and Lyla Freechild (founder of studio lyla) who tries to convey some strong messages through her art.I follow all these designers and artists very closely because all of them believe in slow fashion and embrace the beauty of handmade and recycled products.

What is my greatest extravagance? I love wearing good clothes and I always fall for sarees. I have a wardrobe full of handcrafted sarees.

On what occasion would I lie? Just like any other human I used to lie when I was a kid but now I think telling a lie doesn’t do any good to anyone. It is better to tell a truth than a lie because it’s the very foundation of a healthy relationship.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? In India people from other professions don’t think of Art and Craft as a profession. I am a textile designer but I call myself an artist so,whenever I tell anyone that I am a textile artist they think of it as a hobby and they assume that I am jobless. In India art is not a very well respected field.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? After having a long debate with my family who wanted me to get married and become a housewife I found a good job in a big company and that was the happiest moment for me. Having found that job I felt like I can also contribute my bit to the humanity through my art.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I refrain myself from following and buying from international brands and designers. I just don’t feel the need of it.However I think that I should stay up to date with all the knowledge to be able to understand the current market trends better. I don’t want to support fast fashion but knowledge about everything is important.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Finding happiness in my work is the greatest achievement. I launched my studio (Studio Malang) in 2017 and it was a milestone for me and right now I am at a transition where I am learning to create eco-friendly products for Studio Malang because I have realized that sustainable fashion will lead towards greater ecological integrity and social justice.

Where would I most like to live? I would like to live at a place like Amazon forest where I will get to discover new flowers and birds every day.

What is my most treasured possession? My body and my soul which has always been there for me through thick and thin and continues to do the same.

What is my most marked characteristic? My dressing style makes me look different than others. I love to change my style very often which helps me stay away from boredom in life.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? I live in jaipur and I love spending my time at Jawahar Kala Kendra which was designed by Charles Correa in 1993. This space is a cultural hub and preserves Rajasthan’s myriad arts and crafts.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Anokhi cafe in jaipur serves the best cheesecakes and that is my favourite place to eat in jaipur. They have a plenty of organic vegetarian and vegan food.

What books influenced my life and how? The kundalini has inspired me a lot to explore what’s within. It has helped me explore my inner powers and fears. It has helped me grow spiritually and I am still exploring and learning about more about kundalini.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Adam by Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad (The dream project)  It is a song about how Adam came into existence, about how how the soul entered into his body and I love the lyrics and music.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I am a very big fan of mystic Kabir’s writing, poems and philosophy. He lived once and now lives in his own stories, poems and fiction. He always used to identify himself free from from religion. He believed that there is only one power with different names which is the creator of this beautiful world and supported the idea of minimalist living.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? I love my grandmother who has been through a lot and still able to love everyone unconditionally.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Mistress of Spices is my all time favorite movie. It is about a woman with mystic powers who has the ability to change the world. It is a powerful movie.

What role plays art in my life and work? I believe that art is everywhere and a human is a creative creature. Human will not be able to survive without having any art in their life. Everything that makes you think has art involved in it. The way you see the world is art. We all live in art, even if we are not aware of it.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? You can create your own life is what most of the people want to interpret it like.I agree that one can create their own life but also I am happy with what I have and I believe that you don’t always need to do something big to live a life you love. Sometimes accepting what you have and building around it is also a very big achievement. Not everybody wants to achieve Name, Fame and Money to feel worth telling their story. Some people just love what they have and I am one of them.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My best friend, My grandmother and my sister. They are always there to support me in every phase of life.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020? If I get an opportunity I would love to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I love his aesthetics and would love to design for him someday but for now I am looking forward to collaborate with international brands for freelance print design projects to be able to create some fun prints.

Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2020? I would really love to meet Anita Lal & Simran Lal (founders of Brand GoodEarth) to learn more about sustainable fashion and art.

What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on? I am working upon creating a range of products which are made out of waste. Reuse, Recycle and Recreate is the name of that project and I am very much looking forward to it.

Where can you see me or my work in 2020?  I will be collaborating with brands like Fabindia for some fun projects.I am also developing my own website for my studio called Studio Malang other than this I keep exhibiting in different cities of India and my social media is always flooded with my work.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?  Creating a life and work you love is passion and you would never leave what you love. Passionate people have some inner forces which provide them a purpose in life and their brain is always at work.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? I would like you to invite Skyee Morrison and Lyla Freechild because I want to know more about what inspired them.
