What is the best thing that I love about my work?
I love the fact that it changes. My work evolves through time, both in the manner in which I work and the technique I employ. It bores me to always do the same thing.
What is my idea of happiness?
To feel comfortable within our own selves, to like ourselves and have a sense of achievement from what we do. Happiness also requires having genuine relationships and no regrets.
What is my greatest fear?
I fear illness, physical, but mainly psychic and mental. My greatest fear is to be blocked, of not being able to do what I want to do and to forget. I have many beautiful memories that I cherish and want to preserve.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
I detest my inability to communicate well with others. This is perhaps why I employ art to reach out.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
There are so many. I admire artists who changed the way art is made. I am thinking of Marina Abramovich, Olafur Eliasson , Anish Kapoor …. Just to name a few because I cannot list them all.
What is my greatest extravagance?
I do not allow anyone to watch me while I work in my studio, especially if I am painting.
This is considered weird. It is a kind of modesty, because painting or drawing for me is a personal activity, often intimate.
On what occasion would I lie?
If I would risk hurting someone deeply.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
I don’t like how much time it takes. The slowness.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
My work is mostly done in solitude, but the few times I felt happy, I found myself working together with others. I like to collaborate on projects with other artists, but it has only occurred rarely.
If I could, what would I change about myself?
I would change how I am with other people. I would like to be more effusive and not always think of myself as an annoying intruder.
What is my greatest achievement in work?
When I was named in an art book “Fascination with reality” of the Olomouc Museum in the Czech Republic. I was named among the second generation hyper realist painters together with Charles Bell, Denis Peterson, Gottfried Helnwein, Alyssa Monks.
Where would I most like to live?
I would like to live in the mountains, in a wooded area in a large house surrounded by a field. I would love to have a large and luminous study and lots of animals.
What is my most treasured possession?
My manual skill and the ability to think outside the box.
What is my most marked characteristic?
I am determined.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
I am not overly fond of where I live. I prefer parks. Moving clouds, trees, and open spaces are more (stimulating) exciting for me. Everything Nature creates enchants me with its beauty.
What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?
I do not have a single favorite place. I like either down-to-earth places or very sophisticated ones.
A pizza is fine, ethnic cuisine or a plate by a great chef. I am not fond of middle grounds.
What books influenced my life and how?
When I was a child they gave me a small book on human anatomy and I fell in love with it and began to draw skeletons and bones everywhere. My mother thought I would study to be a doctor. I still have that book!
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?
This is a tough question because I am very fond of music. Perhaps: Satie’s Gymnopedie and also a piece by David Byrne or Nick Drake.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?
I loved the Diane Arbus character imagined in the movie: “Fur”. An artist, a little like Alice in Wonderland, who avoids a pre-established social pattern in order to seek her true identity.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?
I respect all those who show a strong dose of courage in pursuing what they believe for the welfare of all.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?
I do not know the English title: “Il mestiere delle armi” by Ermanno Olmi, “Oltre il giardino” with Peter Sellers e “L’ultima tempesta” by Peter Greenway.
What role plays art in my life and work?
Art is my life. It is my daily existence, art defines all my choices. I have a ‘religious’ approach to art. I live it with devotion and absolute loyalty.
What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me?
I do not believe that to be true. It is not uncommon to hear that we can achieve everything in our own life and if we do not, we alone are to blame. This conviction can be frustrating. I think, instead, that we are all connected and our choices and our actions influence but are also influenced, by the contexts that affect and surround us. We are interdependent.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
I have a dear friend who has become throughout the years my greatest fan. He owns several works of mine and when I am conflicted, I go to him for advice. I trust his criticism and his aesthetic sense. His sincerity towards me helps me in my work.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020?
My dream would be to work with galleries like: White Cube in London, Konig Galerie in Berlin,
Spruth Magers (London/Berlin), MOT International in Bruxelles, Galerie Krinzinger in Vienna, Kaufmann Repetto in Milano, Galleria Massimo De Carlo in Milano. Just to name a few!
Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2020?
Curators of the caliber of Christine Macel or Massimiliano Gioni. In any case I would love to work with curators that are honest and professional and who help me to progress as an artist.
What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on?
I am concentrating on not pictorial works and can’t wait to finish these in order to keep going.
Where can you see me or my work in 2020?
Right now I am not planning a exhibition. I hope to have one in 2021, but given the moment, I am not sure when and where it will take place.
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?
Passion is what makes us vital. Without it, we are but an empty shell.
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
I mention Micaela Calliero and Jara Marzulli.
