The Heroine’s Journey of Giulia Caminada

What is the best thing that I love about my work? That for me, working is a game. I have been lucky enough to do jobs that I love. In addition to photographing, I teach Italian in high school and I dedicate myself to anthropological and linguistic research.
What is my idea of happiness? Do what you love while respecting yourself and others.
What is my greatest fear? They are the great fears of the world, of our times.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I have learned to love myself for who I am. Only when we learn to love and feed ourselves as if we were our own children we can give love to others.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Many… but not very many. One above all Giovanni Gastel. A native of Lake Como, like me, we are two “laghées”, as he says. He is one of the most lucid intellectuals of our time, as well as being an internationally recognized photographer. The comparison with him is a source of continuous inspiration. I am immensely grateful to him for the trust he has given me for the realization of the photographic project Acque amate, a dialogue between Lake Como and the Adriatic Sea. A recent photography and poetry project that I did with the photographer Delia Biele and which saw the contribution of Gastel himself, the writer Dacia Maraini and the critic Enzo Carli. The book can be purchased at the link:
What is my greatest extravagance? Having photographed 600 inhabitants of Barni, the town where I live (in Vallassina, on Lake Como), to make a photo album, a book of black and white portraits. It is the project Un paese in posa. Ritratto fotografico di una comunità (A country in pose, Photographic portrait of a community). Rivista Fotografare, gennaio 2020

On what occasion would I lie? Mine are selfless, beneficial little lies. Dictated by empathy and the desire not to hurt someone.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I love everything about my work.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I look nostalgically at the past time, at the people who were with me at that time. But if I have to talk about happiness, it will always and only today be where you can find it in little things.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Cerco di migliorarmi ogni giorno ma non cambierei qualcosa di particolare.
What is my greatest achievement in work? Il Vocabolario del dialetto di Barni, created with the collaboration of the inhabitants of the town; photographic projects Un paese in posa and Acque amate. Copertine di alcune pubblicazioni

Where would I most like to live? I love the world, and one city that I loved so much is Paris. But I like to live where I live now.
What is my most treasured possession? My family.
What is my most marked characteristic? Kindness and thinking big, but with your feet firmly on the ground.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? My home.
What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? I am often in Bellagio. The place where I gladly stop for a coffee is Nenè; for an aperitif or dinner Il Perlo Ristorante has an excellent cuisine: the rice and fillet of perch by chef Piercarlo Lattuada… is to be tasted. For a pizza, at Nando’s. Giulia Caminada, Bellagio

What books influenced my life and how? One of my favorite writers is G. Bachelard. Among the many books read, I gladly remember Pearl S. Buck’s Donna Imperiale, the fictional story of Ci Xi, the last empress of China. The writer paints a grandiose portrait of the last empress, without neglecting the great appreciation she enjoyed among the Chinese population, who referred to her as the “Old Buddha”. I also love poetry books very much because I also love writing about them.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Pulenta e galena fregia by Davide Van De Sfroos at full throttle!
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I don’t have paper heroes even though I’ve known a lot of them. The books we read form a library in us, a memory that accumulates. It is also through them that I look at the world. The books read are me and all the heroines of my books live in me more
than I can believe.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Growing up I realized that the heroes weren’t exactly what I imagined them to be, the ones who lived in the stories. My heroes are ourselves who always manage to be alive, despite what happens to us. I love life spent without the fear of being.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Once by John Carney. More than a film, it is a gift.
What role play stories in my life and work? I am convinced that man is made up of stories, not of atoms.
What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? I once believed that. Now I am convinced that it is essential to embrace your destiny and then start from there to narrate your life.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? For sure my children and my mother. They always know my projects first. I’m the test bed. Their impression helps me to adjust the shot and to understand to move forward.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2021? I would like to continue working in photography and develop projects in the best possible way.
Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2021? I reach out to every person who is reading this interview and they know they can make a difference. I love meeting new open minded people with different horizons and opinions.
What project, in 2021, am I looking forward to work on? I’m working on a photographic project about time, on a Vanitas, and on another one that has flowers as its subject, which I love very much. In painting, the vanitas is a still life with symbolic elements alluding to the theme of the transience of life. The name derives from the biblical phrase vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas and is a warning to the ephemeral condition of existence. This pictorial genre had its maximum development in the seventeenth century, especially in Holland. Mine will be a photographic Vanitas. I am working on the publication of a book of poetry. Giulia Caminada, Flowers

Where can you see me or my work in 2021? Covid has redefined times and spaces. The photographic exhibition Acque amate is visible at the link The real exhibitions of Acque Amate were at Villa Olmo in Como and at Palazzetto Baviera in Senigallia in 2020. The next stops should be Bellagio and Milan. I have a site made by me, at the link On Instagram giuliacaminada_gc or Facebook

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? They mean that nothing great in the world has been done without passion and that passion has no age. Just take the first steps towards your talents, then the rest comes by itself.
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Christina Soderstrom designer at Yvone Christa, the stylist Chiara Boni, the Instagrammer Mina Barrio, the artist Angela Caremi, the journalist Paola Pioppi, the journalist and photographer Marina Macrì, the photographers Delia Biele, Carlotta Musardo, Costantina Pozzi, Antonella Vecchi.
