What’s the best thing I love about my job? I am a librarian. What I love about my job is being able to have potential access to all the books that are written by human beings, to all the ideas and news. I have always been a very curious person, I get bored easily and I need constant mental stimulation, this job totally satisfies me from this point of view. I love my job very much but I believe that each of us should work a maximum of 30 hours a week and devote himself to something else, in my case I participate in the promotion of a Brazilian culture center, specifically activities related to capoeira and I write songs, stories, theatrical texts, a novel all with a lot of torment and yet I continue to do so, it is stronger than me. My part time is a political act of existential rebellion.

What is my idea of happiness? Well, after what I wrote above I might answer like Borges “I have always imagined Heaven as a kind of library”. … “A city is not a city without a library. Maybe he pretends to be called a city anyway, but if he doesn’t have a library he knows he can’t fool anyone. ” I remember that Borges, in addition to being a magnificent writer, was also a librarian.

Curiously I feel that this is not the case. Happiness is living in nature and being together with the people I love, in particular for me happiness is the sea with a good book (to read or to write), with the people I love. Maybe with a thermal spring and a luxuriant forest nearby.

What is my biggest fear? That there is no meaning to our existence.

What is the trait I most regret in myself? A certain reticence and dispersiveness, people find it very difficult to frame me and I certainly often contribute to sewing this shy and bizarre character on me, it is something that I control up to a certain point, almost always involuntary.

Which living people in my profession do I admire the most? In Italy, I really appreciate Caterina Ramonda, who is involved in the promotion of reading and is responsible for the activities of the libraries of the Fossanese Union (Cuneo). She organizes projects, writes books and blogs about books, librarians and teachers, reading and kids. As promoters of reading in general, even if not strictly librarians, I really appreciate the English Aidan Chambers and the American Jack Zipes.

What is my biggest extravagance? I think it’s being a capoerista at 46 and not even being Brazilian.

On what occasion would I lie? To save books and culture, to save the people I love and living beings in general.

What is the thing I don’t like most about my job? The excess of bureaucracy and the pyramid organization of my institution that slows down many initiatives and affects the effectiveness of the service.

When and where was I happiest in my job? In my work without a doubt when I was working in the library of Granarolo in Emilia Romagna, but the climate and lifestyle in Rome correspond to me much more.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I think I’d like to be more outgoing and light.

What is my biggest success in the job? I have experienced many things that have given good results: the transfer of an entire library, the landing on social networks, a small publication on Jella Lepman, but the thing that makes me most proud is being able to convey my passion for reading and the importance of libraries during guided tours dedicated to schools.

What is my most valuable asset? My daughter Nora

What is my strongest feature? The depth (for better or for worse)

What is the place that inspires me the most, in my city? The area that goes from the non-Catholic Cemetery to Monte dei Cocci up to the Slaughterhouse of Testaccio (Rome)

What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city? La Casetta rossa at Garbatella

Which books have influenced my life and how? Impossible to answer, they are really a lot! It depends on the phases, on the moments: I could answer that all literature in general has influenced my entire life. I can mention Calvino, Borges, Allende, Màrquez, George Amado but also in more recent times Stanislaw Lem with Solaris and the stories of Ray Bradbury. In general I look for traces of metaphysics in literature, experiences outside the norm, something that makes reality extraordinary. But I don’t like the excess of the fantastic, as in the case of the fantasy genre, I prefer realistic settings in which at a certain point something comes out of the sow …

What role do stories play in my life and in my work? I’m everything, I wouldn’t exist without the stories. I wouldn’t have survived without the stories

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2021? Can I dream a little? I would like to write a new story that talks about libraries and those who live in them and about reading and writing and Great Mothers in a mythical key. It would be wonderful if the talented Octavia Monaco, whom I have admired since time immemorial, illustrated it and if we could present it in many bookstores and libraries in Italy and also if one day it would be translated into English and presented at the New York Public Library, which in my opinion is one of the places most magical in the world together with the Pyramids of Egypt and Lake Titicaca. Finally that it is chosen to become a film directed by Lana Wachowski 

What people in my profession who can really make a difference in my creative career would I like to meet in 2021? Well, from a creative point of view or as a writer, the people who could really make a difference for me are Chiara Reali and Giorgio Raffaelli from the publishing house http://www.zona42.it/, the publishing house that seems to me to be the right one for my novel called Archivio Altamira, but I understand that they are not very interested in novice novels and for now I have not even come forward because I am awaiting the results of a literary award to which I have sent the novel.

What project, in 2021, am I looking forward to working on? This year I would like to dedicate it to the promotion of the novel, the podcast and the Altamira Archive page. I have several ideas to develop once this phase is over, it will depend on the signals I will receive from the Universe!

Qual è la cosa migliore che amo del mio lavoro?

Sono una bibliotecaria. Quello che adoro del mio lavoro è poter avere potenziale accesso a tutti i libri che vengono scritti dagli esseri umani, a tutte le idee e le novità. Da sempre sono una persona molto curiosa, mi annoio facilmente ed ho bisogno di continui stimoli mentali, questo lavoro mi appaga totalmente da questo punto di vista. Amo molto il mio lavoro ma ritengo che ognuno di noi dovrebbe lavorare al massimo 30 ore a settimana e dedicarsi anche ad altro, nel mio caso partecipo alla promozione di un centro di cultura brasiliana, in specifico attività legate alla capoeira e scrivo canzoni, racconti, testi teatrali, un romanzo il tutto con molto tormento eppure continuo a farlo, è più forte di me. Il mio part time è un atto politico di ribellione esistenziale.

Qual è la mia idea di felicità?

Beh, dopo quello che ho scritto sopra potrei rispondere come Borges “Ho sempre immaginato il Paradiso come una sorta di biblioteca”. … “Una città non è una città senza una biblioteca. Magari pretende di chiamarsi città lo stesso, ma se non ha una biblioteca sa bene di non poter ingannare nessuno.” Ricordo che Borges, oltre che magnifico scrittore, è stato anche un bibliotecario.

Curiosamente sento che non è così. La felicità è vivere nella natura e stare assieme alle persone che amo, in particolare per me la felicità è il mare con un bel libro (da leggere o da scrivere), con le persone che amo. Magari con vicino una fonte termale e un bosco rigoglioso.

Qual è la mia più grande paura?

Che non ci sia un senso alla nostra esistenza.

Qual è il tratto che deploro di più in me stesso?

Una certa reticenza e dispersività, le persone fanno molta fatica a inquadrarmi e io spesso di certo contribuisco a cucirmi addosso questo personaggio schivo e bizzarro, è una cosa che controllo fino ad un certo punto, quasi sempre involontaria.

Quali persone viventi nella mia professione ammiro di più?

In Italia apprezzo molto Caterina Ramonda, che si occupa di promozione della lettura ed è responsabile delle attività delle biblioteche dell’Unione del Fossanese (Cuneo). Organizza progetti, scrive libri e cura un blog per parlare di libri, bibliotecari e insegnanti, lettura e ragazzi.

Come promotori della lettura in genere, anche se non strettamente bibliotecari, apprezzo molto l’inglese Aidan Chambers e lo statunitense Jack Zipes

Qual è la mia più grande stravaganza?

Credo sia essere una capoerista a 46 anni e senza nemmeno essere brasiliana.

Per salvare i libri e la cultura, per salvare le persone che amo e gli esseri viventi in generale.

L’eccesso di burocrazia e l’organizzazione piramidale della mia Istituzione che rallenta molte iniziative e incide sull’efficacia del servizio

Ho sperimentato molte cose che hanno dato buoni risultati: il trasferimento di un’intera biblioteca, lo sbarco sui social network, una piccola pubblicazione su Jella Lepman, ma la cosa che più mi inorgoglisce è essere riuscita a trasmettere ai ragazzi la mia passione per la lettura e l’importanza delle biblioteche durante le visite guidate dedicate alle scuole

Impossibile rispondere, sono veramente tantissimi! Dipende dalle fasi, dai momenti: potrei rispondere che tutta la letteratura in generale ha influenzato la mia intera vita. Posso citare Calvino, Borges, Allende, Màrquez, George Amado ma anche in tempi più recenti Stanislaw Lem con Solaris e i racconti di Ray Bradbury. In generale cerco nella letteratura tracce di metafisica, esperienze al di fuori della normalità, qualcosa che renda la realtà straordinaria. Ma non amo l’eccesso di fantastico, come nel caso del genere fantasy, preferisco ambientazioni realistiche in cui ad un certo punto qualcosa esce dal seminato…

Sarebbe meraviglioso se la illustrasse la bravissima Octavia Monaco che ammiro da tempo immemore e se potessimo presentarla in tante librerie e biblioteche d’Italia e anche che un giorno venga tradotto in inglese e presentato alla New York Public Library, che secondo me è uno dei posti più magici del mondo assieme alle Piramidi d’Egitto e al Lago Titicaca. Infine che venga scelto per diventare un film diretto da Lana Wachowski 

Quali persone nella mia professione che possono fare davvero la differenza nella mia carriera creativa mi piacerebbe incontrare nel 2021?

Beh, dal punto di vista creativo ovvero come scrittrice, le persone che potrebbero davvero fare la differenza per me sono Chiara Reali e Giorgio Raffaelli della casa editrice http://www.zona42.it/, la casa editrice che mi sembra la più giusta per il mio romanzo intitolato Archivio Altamira, ma mi sembra di capire che non siano molto interessati a romanzi di esordienti e per ora non mi sono nemmeno fatta avanti perché attendo i risultati di un premio letterario a cui ho inviato il romanzo.

A quale progetto, nel 2021, non vedo l’ora di lavorare?

Quest’anno vorrei dedicarlo alla promozione del romanzo, del podcast e della pagina Archivio Altamira. Ho diverse idee da sviluppare una volta conclusa questa fase, dipenderà dai segnali che riceverò dall’Universo!

Dove puoi vedere me o il mio lavoro nel 2021?

Sono in cerca di un editore serio. Non è facile in questa situazione di pandemia e incertezza dei mercati, ma nel frattempo sto cercando di fare qualcosa di utile: costruire un mio pubblico.
