The Heroine’s Journey of Maryna Liakhor

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

One of the best thing is to discover and unlock the hidden potential within a person – especially the potential they were unaware of. There is something deeply fulfilling about guiding someone to recognize their strengths, abilities they had never truly seen in themselves before. I find it fascinating to witness the transformation that happens when a person begins to transcend their own limiting self-perception. What once seemed difficult, impossible, or completely out of reach gradually becomes attainable through dedication, perseverance, and consistent effort. Over time, their mindset shifts, their confidence grows, and what was once a distant dream becomes their lived reality. Being part of that journey – seeing someone evolve, gain clarity, and step into a stronger version of themselves – is incredibly rewarding. It reminds me why I do what I do: not just to help people improve, but to help them realize that they are capable of far more than they ever imagined.

What is my idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness is understanding that what I do truly makes a difference. Even if the impact may seem small or almost imperceptible on a global scale, but it can create profound changes in the life of a single individual. For me, that is where real meaning lies. Happiness is realizing that I have played a part in shaping the lives of many children – supporting their development, influencing their goals, and helping to form their lifestyle and discipline. It is knowing that through my belief in them, my guidance, and my motivation, they were able to see their own potential more clearly and strive toward their dreams with confidence. There is deep joy in watching them grow – not only as dancers but as individuals. Seeing them achieve their goals and continue their journey in ballet, stronger and more determined, fills me with pride and gratitude. Their progress, resilience, and success are the greatest rewards of my work, and they define my idea of true happiness.

What is my greatest fear?

My greatest fear is that I may not be able to accomplish everything I aspire to achieve. I have many goals, dreams, and ideas that I carry within me, and they are deeply connected to both – my personal growth and the impact I want to have on others. This fear does not come from doubt in my abilities, but rather from a strong desire to make the most of my time, energy, and potential. I constantly strive to grow, to contribute, and to leave a meaningful mark through my work. The thought of leaving some dreams unrealized or some plans unfinished can feel unsettling. At the same time, this fear also motivates me. It pushes me to work harder, stay disciplined, and remain focused on what truly matters. It reminds me that time is valuable and that every effort counts. In many ways, this fear drives me forward and encourages me to keep evolving.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

Perfectionism! I constantly strive for the highest standard in everything I do. No matter how much I achieve, there is always a voice inside me saying that I could have done better, practiced longer, refined my skills more, or prepared more thoroughly. For me, there is always room for improvement. Despite this pushes me to grow and maintain excellence, it can also be exhausting. It often prevents me from fully appreciating my accomplishments because I am already focused on what could have been improved. I hold myself to very high expectations, and naturally, I extend those expectations to my work, my students, and the people I collaborate with. I recognize that this perfectionism is both – a strength and a challenge. It fuels discipline, progress, and high standards, but it also requires balance. Learning to accept imperfection while still striving for excellence is something I continue to work on!

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?

I do not have one specific idol whom I admire above all others. Instead, I look up to form more of a composite image – an inspiring combination of qualities, values, and achievements that I deeply respect. I believe every accomplished professional has something unique to offer. From one person, I may admire discipline and unwavering dedication; from another, creativity and artistic sensitivity; from someone else, leadership, resilience, or the ability to inspire others. I consciously observe and learn from these qualities, integrating the best aspects into my own professional growth. Among others, I would like to mention a few individuals whose work, integrity, and contribution to the field have left a strong impression on me: Dr. Merritt Moore, Alexei Ratmansky, Tamara Rojo – they represent the level of excellence and impact I strive towards in my own career.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

More likely, it is the daily routine. I understand that a structured routine is essential for building the discipline and consistency required for true success, however I still find it challenging at times. The repetitive nature of certain tasks can feel limiting, so I have to figure out how to keep my energy and creativity alive. To approach this challenge proactively, I make an effort to diversify my routine whenever possible – whether by introducing new exercises, exploring different teaching methods, or finding small creative ways to break the monotony. In this way, even within the structure of routine, I can maintain freshness, engagement, and motivation for both – myself and those I work with.

When and where was I the happiest in my work?

I feel the happiest at the end of each academic year. There is always a moment when looking back at the journey we’ve taken together, I experience a profound sense of joy and fulfillment. Seeing the progress my students have made – the skills they have honed, the goals they have achieved – fills me with a deep sense of bliss. I am always mindful of the challenges they have faced along the way, and I deeply admire the courage they have shown to reach their goals. Being able to witness their growth firsthand is incredibly rewarding. I also feel truly blessed to be a part of their journey – to guide, support, and share knowledge and experience with them, and to instill faith and confidence
along the way. Those moments of shared triumph and transformation are what make my work meaningful and bring me the greatest happiness.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

Probably, I wouldn’t change anything about myself. I am far from perfect, and like everyone, I have my share of negative traits. However, I recognize that these traits have shaped me into the person I am today and have played a role in everything I have achieved in my life. Rather than wishing them away, I prefer to focus on strengthening my existing strengths and finding ways to channel my less desirable traits into positive outcomes. By understanding and managing them, I can turn challenges into opportunities, growth, and even advantages. This approach allows me to continue evolving while staying true to who I am, embracing both – my strengths and imperfections – as essential parts of my journey.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

My greatest achievement in my work is each and every one of my students who forge their own path and achieve success in their chosen profession. As a student-centered educator, I see every individual as a unique treasure, full of potential and promise. For me, true accomplishment lies not in personal accolades, but in creating the conditions for my students to grow, develop, and ultimately shine. Guiding them, supporting them, and witnessing their progress – the moment they realize their potential and step confidently into their own success – is the most meaningful reward I could ever receive. In many ways, their achievements are a reflection of the dedication, care, and belief I invest in them, and that is what I consider my greatest achievement.

I get used to live in big cities, where life is full of energy, opportunities, and constant movement. I thrive in the dynamic rhythm of urban life, where there is always something happening and new perspectives are waiting to be explored. At the same time, I deeply admire the presence of vast bodies of water, like the ocean. Its expanse inspires me, brings a sense of calm, and helps me maintain balance amidst a busy life. If I could choose, I would love to live somewhere that offers both – the vibrant energy of a city and the serene, restorative influence of the ocean. That combination allows me to stay inspired, centered, and fully engaged with both my work and my personal life.

Finally, “Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi helped me understand the joy of being fully engaged in what you do, which I try to help my students experience as they reach their goals.

Together, these books have shaped how I teach, how I lead, and how I approach life.

What role play stories in my life and work?

My life is already a story. When I look back at the little girl who started ballet at eight years old without clear understanding of her dreams but with a passion in her heart. She could not even imagined that one day she would become an international ballet teacher, live and work in different countries, speak several foreign languages, and discover diverse cultures around the world. Was I always confident in my success? Probably not. However, one quality has stayed with me through all these years and has never changed – I never give up! No matter how challenging the goal, how difficult the circumstances, or how hard the journey became, I continue. Through tears and failures, I stand up again and keep moving forward.

The words “You are the storyteller of your own life” mean that everything is in your own hands. We each have the power to shape our journey, make choices, and decide how we respond to challenges. Life is like a story, and we are both the author and the protagonist – responsible for the direction it takes, the lessons we learn, and the impact we leave behind. For me, this idea is deeply motivating, both personally and professionally. It reminds me to live intentionally, embrace responsibility for my actions, and inspire others – especially my students – to recognize that they have the power to shape their own stories and achieve their potential.
