The Heroine’s Journey of Fabia Zobel

What is the best thing that I love about my work?  To be my own master. Nobody controls my time.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Being deeply connected with all I do – with my work, my movements, the people around me, my thoughts, nature…. Best case: In silence.

What is my greatest fear? To loose curiosity.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?  I am often very unconcentrated.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?
– Vahe Yeremyan, a painter from the US.
– The photograopher David Loftus, he is able to put so much emotion and joy in every picture, mostly by choosing an incredible play of colors.
– Jennifer Irvine, an english painter.
– Lip Comarella, a digital artist from Vienna, Austria.
– And Jean-Jacques Sempé. He is my alltime favourite.

I guess I admire all of these people not only for their “skill”, but for their courage to put so much emotion into their art – mostly through color and light. This is always what I am striving for.

What is my greatest extravagance?  To go to bed when I am tired.

On what occasion would I lie? To avoid to hurt somebody deeply.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? That I have to decide which path I want to take, because you cannot do EVERYTHING.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? All the times I sat (and sit) at my canvas and did a brave stroke I wasn`t sure about it before, ….and which worked then incredibly good! This happened just lately. It was so joyful and fulfilling,it made me nearly cry.

If I could, what would I change about myself? More concentration!

What is my greatest achievement in work? To grow instantly by taking risks, small or big ones. Nothing brings you and your personality further than being brave.

Where would I most like to live? Next to the sea would be great,or somewhere surrounded by beautiful nature, but actually I have to say: It is more important for me, that lovely people are around. The rest doesn`t count that much.

What is my most treasured possession? The diaries my mom wrote when I was a baby.
And the old chest my grandpa used when he had to flee during World War II – he had only this chest for all his stuff. You can still read his scratched name in the wooden surface.

What is my most marked characteristic? Optimism and curiosity.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?  I live in Hamburg, and this city is pure magic, everywhere. But I always come back to the harbour and the Speicherstadt. I just love ships and bridges! The Isemarkt is the longest farmer`s market in Europe, and I love to be there. So many smells, so many color, so many people….

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
To eat: L`Orient. A very creative kitchen, modern lebanese.
To drink: Altes Mädchen or Lüttliv with friends.

What books influenced my life and how? The perfume, Patrick Süskind. I read it in school and I had such images in my head, incredible! I started to be more careful about the everyday life stuff we take for granted, because it is a story about senses, about somebody who uses the smell to do something incredible (bad. But incredible), and how extremely senses can influence a person`s behaviour and perception of the world.

TC Boyle, Water Music. It created also a huge journey in my head. I would love to paint the whole stuff out, but it is too much. I have always been in love with adventure stories.

Maurice Sendak – Where the wild things are. This was my fav book as a child, and I guess this shaped me and my thoughts and comes very, very close to who I am.

Who are my favorite writers? (Jean-Jacques)Sempé is probably the one I love to “read” the most. He always only has a few sentences. But the connection between image and sentence always, always touches me. Hero!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Loreena Mc Kennitt. She has something from both worlds : The world of the living and the world of the dead.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I would love to say something impressive, but I really love Lara Croft and Lilo (from Lilo and Stitch) 😀 !

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? I admire some people who fight for a better world without getting tired, like f.e. Paul Watson and his team (Sea Sheperd).
I really ,really admire all those people out there who help others or nature every single day without ever thinking about quitting that!

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? The Godfather!

What role plays art in my life and work? I guess it influences me from tip to toe. Art pushes me and makes me calm the same time and it teaches me how to make decisions.
Really: Art is my greatest life teacher. A big part I learned about life and growth came through making art, and what I learned from other occurrences in life influenced my art, too. It connects me with other people. It helps me to get shit and the beauty out of me. It makes me listen to my soul and understanding how my personality works.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?  I have a few people I really rely on and I would always ask for advice. They always push me in a special way.
These are Jan Philipp Schwarz, a very good friend and artist from Munich,Germany.
Simone Kesterton, a beloved and very good friend – we connected through art and we talk a lot about it.  My mum 🙂 – as always.  And my partner, Daniel, who always says: whatever comes, I will help you to keep going.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? Wow. If I could choose??? Vahe Yeremyan! I guess, he could teach me a lot and I would love to talk about his art. I really, really would love to have a bunch of awesome painters to work in an Atelier with. I also would love to illustrate more boardgames, for every target group. I just love that kind of work!

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? I really would love to have a long, good drink with David Loftus.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? To enlarge my painting gallery and to get deeper connections in the fine art scene. To focus more on landscapes and environments.

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? I am, at the moment, in a very retired time. For the first time in my life, I enjoy silence and being for myself to getting deeper into art. So I guess it will be hard to see me somewhere in 2018. But I am in Hamburg, and I am open to meet (new) people. My online gallery for fine art just opened (april 2018), so you can see me online. www.fabiazobelart.com Most of my digital work is for projects that will take several years. So I unfortunately cannot talk about it. But I can say, that it is Concept Art for Themeparks and other kinds of entertainment architecture.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? Lifelong learning! And I LOVE it!

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
Simone Grünewald  (Hamburg, Germany)
Jennifer Irvine (Glasgow, Scotland)
Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde (Munich, Germany)
Julia Marquardt (Hamburg, Germany)
