What is the best thing that I love about my work?To tell stories (both as sequential pages or illustrations), to be able to travel everywhere in space and time from one’s own home, carrying along a reader who comes with me from a different place and time. To be able to narrate in any form is a superpower (that doesn’t always work at its best potential). A really “magic” moment happens when what you envisioned takes shape in a drawing better than you were expecting.

Raccontare storie (che si tratti di disegni in sequenza o illustrazioni); poter viaggiare ovunque, nello spazio e nel tempo, da casa propria.. trascinando con me un lettore, che da un altro luogo e tempo mi accompagna. Saper raccontare, in qualsiasi forma, è un superpotere (che non sempre funziona al massimo). Un momento davvero “magico” si realizza quando ciò che progetti riesce a concretizzarsi, in un disegno, meglio di quanto immaginato.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? To be tranquil, in the right place, with the right person/people, without the anxiety and the anguish that are with us every day.

Essere sereni, nel posto giusto, con la/le persona/e giusta/e; senza le ansie o le angosce che ci accompagnano tutti i giorni.

What is my greatest fear? Illness, loneliness, money hardships. The possibility to have serious eyesight problems.

Malattia, solitudine, difficoltà economiche. In particolare, la possibilità di avere gravi problemi alla vista.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Too much anxiety and too little hope. I wish I could be the PR manager I will never be.

Troppa ansia e poca fiducia; vorrei saper essere la PR che non sarò mai.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? I admire those who can work on several projects at once without losing their focus, quality and constancy; and I hold in great esteem those who are good at dialoguing without showing arrogance.

What is my greatest extravagance? To work during the night hours.

On what occasion would I lie? Unfortunately, sometimes one will need to avoid useless conflict or to protect their privacy. I plead the fifth amendment, with defensive omissions (in my own behalf or in someone else’s).

Purtroppo capita di dover evitare inutili scontri o di voler proteggere il proprio privato. Mi appello al 5° emendamento, con omissioni difensive (in difesa mia o di altri)

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The lack of financial safety and stability that is typical of this job. More generally speaking, the lack of protection in case of serious health or family problems.

La mancanza di sicurezza e stabilità (fisiologica di questo lavoro). Più in generale, l’assenza di tutela in caso di gravi problemi fisici o famigliari.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I knew I could work this job for real – during a phone call, a few years back, while I was talking about some sample pages I had sent to a publisher. When I was tasked with drawing “Agenzia Alfa – Il sole del mattino”, an anthology of tales: it was about 300 pages, with a beautiful script by Stefano Piani and dedicated to E. If I could, what would I change about myself? I wish that I could be more optimistic and self-assured, and that I could have the mnemonic abilities I lack. I hope things will be better in my next reincarnation, if there is such a thing.

What is my greatest achievement in work? That’s every time I complete and deliver a story.

Ogni volta che finisco e consegno una storia.

Where would I most like to live? If I had to choose one place, that would be Ireland. That’a country that always held a great fascination for me, where day-to-day reality and myth seem to live side by side, despite the advent of modernity.

Dovessi scegliere un solo posto opterei per l’Irlanda: mi ha sempre affascinato, è un Paese dove realtà quotidiana e mito sembrano poter convivere, nonostante la modernità.

What is my most treasured possession? Everything I have read, seen, and listened to: my physical bookcases, my physical, digital and mental archives; and therefore what I learned to do in my line of work. That’s not a gift from some superior being, but the result of a journey.

Tutto ciò che ho letto, visto, ascoltato: le mie librerie fisiche, l’archivio fisico, digitale e mentale; di conseguenza, quello che ho imparato a fare nel mio mestiere. Non il “dono” di una qualche entità superiore, ma il risultato di un percorso.

What is my most marked characteristic? Right now, that’s resilience.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The Teatro Civico in Schio, near Vicenza, as a physical place, and theater as a narrative, too: that’s wherever that “magic” is is staged. Luckily there’s a lot of chances all year long to see shows in lots of different places: gardens, town squares, contradas, public halls and private homes, grottos, and more.

Il Teatro Civico di Schio (vicino a Vicenza), come spazio concreto.. ma anche il Teatro come Racconto: ovunque si metta in scena quella “magia”. Fortunatamente non mancano occasioni, durante l’anno, per assistere a spettacoli che si possono svolgere nelle più diverse sedi: giardini, piazze, contrade, locali pubblici e privati, grotte (e non solo).

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? A café owned by friends of mine, and a historic “osteria” (a sort of tavern), that holds memories from the comic world and has ties to historical and literary facts.

What books influenced my life and how? Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Ellen Ripley, a woman who can resist and survive all adversities, even if she didn’t ask for it.

Ellen Ripley, una donna capace di resistere e sopravvivere a qualsiasi avversità (peraltro, non cercata).

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Those people who resist unfavorable conditions and look for uncomfortable answers, while managing not to turn cynic (or worse). Those who don’t just skim the surface of facts, those who develop and grow, without taking it out uselessly on their fellow man.

Le persone che resistono a delle condizioni sfavorevoli, cercando risposte scomode e riuscendo a non diventare ciniche (o peggio). Chi non rimane sulla superfice dei fatti, chi elabora e cresce, senza prendersela inutilmente con il prossimo.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? Considering the vastness of movies that have been made, that’s a paralyzing question… There’s at least three, all of them Italian: Sei donne per l’assassino (Blood and Black Lace) by Mario Bava, Profondo rosso (Deep red) by Dario Argento, La casa dalle finestre che ridono (The house with laughing Windows) by Pupi Avati.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? With a few colleagues I have already worked with in the past, on some projects that are looking for a publisher.

Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2018?  A publisher who would be interested in the projects I mentioned above. I also have a large portfolio of drawings by Pasquale Frisenda, and I’m waiting for the chance to have him sign it…Outside of Italy, in the world of desires, I wish I could meet N. Gaiman , Alan Davis, M. Mignola, Claire Wendling, C. Vess and H. Miyazaki and visit their studios. I would be sure to add new gaffes to an already long list!

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? I am about to draw a hero of my childhood and teenage years, a character from a long-running series of books by Sergio Bonelli Editore. If someone had told me that 30 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed them at all.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? A few of my female colleagues, off the top of my head: Silvia Ziche, Anna Lazzarini and Patrizia Comino. Marta Cuscunà, one of the best actresses and playwrights in contemporary Italian theatre, and Marta Dalla Via, another outstanding – and sharp – actress and playwright. Eva Corte (“Verde Veronese” on Facebook), who works in the field of art restoration, and Erica Boschiero, excellent singer and songwriter.
