The Heroine’s Journey of Samantha Germaine Sim

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Hi I’m Samantha Germaine Sim, also known as Violet1202. I’m 26 and I’m from Singapore(: What I love about the work I do is seeing that it puts a smile on someone’s face. It fills me with such joy and inspiration when a person is happy or feels warmth just by looking at an illustration.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? For me, the idea of happiness is having made someone smile. Seeing some one happy honestly makes me the happiest girl alive!
What is my greatest fear? oh boy, think my greatest fear is if I can’t do art anymore, sounds weird but it does scare me. I fear getting so burnt out, that I stop art entirely.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?  I think, sometimes the feeling of low self esteem creeps in, and from there I’ll be very hard on myself.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Wow! There’s just so many! I can’t possibly pick one, I follow way too many artist! I admire Kyu-Bum Lee, Stephen Silver, Arex Cho and so many more, they have such brilliant work and they inspire me to do more to reach to their level. Their use of colour, shape lighting, and character designs are beautiful. They’ve been my source of inspiration since I was still studying art back at 17 years old.
What is my greatest extravagance? Oh my, I think I would say my digital art tools, like my tablet, my desktop and ipad pro + pencil, but I have to say all worth it in the end! Saving up for it felt like it would never end, but when I finally saved up enough for them, it felt great doing it on my own, and it makes you wanna draw more(:
On what occasion would I lie?  Haha! that’s a funny one, I guess when people ask me how many hours do I sleep. (I tell them I get a full 8 hours, just so not to worry them) Think as artist we all know the time we sleep.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? As an artist, I wouldn’t say “Dislike” but I would say the fear of hearing “It looks great but can we change some parts of this piece”.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?  When I’m working with my awesome friends and colleagues just doing what we love! When time gets crunched in the studio they’re like my happy pill 😀
If I could, what would I change about myself? To not be too temperamental or hard on myself about my work. Sometimes low self esteem can really “kill” it’s not healthy too. Stay positive and look at the goods, not just the bads(:
What is my greatest achievement in work? I think my greatest achievement is when I can make something that can in turn make someone smile(: drawing a simple picture and having someone say “oh it reminds me or you, or a feeling etc” feels really nice(:
Where would I most like to live? Oooo wow, I’d love to live in Europe maybe? or New Zealand(:
What is my most treasured possession? I would have to say a necklace I have around my neck, given to me by my parents when I was just a little kid and a ring by my partner and a little rag doll I had with me since I was 3 years old(:
What is my most marked characteristic?  From what I feel and hear of, people call me a fighter! and bubbly(: I’m known for being a little too out there (I’m the, dance out of no where kind of person)
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?  For me I live in Singapore, it’s a really small country(: a tiny red dot on the map, but there are a ton of things here. I draw inspiration from the beaches near my home, they have beautiful sunsets, the city where the Singapore sky line can be seen and also in the public transport actually, you see lots of interesting characters there(:
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Haha! I’m a very simple girl, I guess I really love to go down to the good old hawker centers in Singapore near my home and have myself a nice plate of Chicken Rice or Ban Mian handmade noodles! Mostly local dishes(:
What books influenced my life and how?  I’m gonna go cliche and say “Harry Potter” for me, it was my first fantasy book as a kid growing up, can you imagine the amount of imagination that was going through a child’s brain that time? from there I just wanted to create and draw. I also loved this comic book series called “W.I.T.C.H” the drawings in there we so beautiful I remembered telling myself I wanna draw or do that when I’m older! and ta-da! here I am in animation(:
Who are my favorite writers? Gee, I don’t really have a favorite writer, I read whatever is normally introduced to me by friends and I’m always blown away by them, I do like Keigo Higashino who wrote “Naoko” it was really well done(: loved how interesting the story was but it did rip me apart at the end (No Spoilers though!)
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?Oh Definitely a Michael Jackson piece “Rock with You”.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?  Ahh! this is too much I can’t choose! Ok I love Rapunzel from “Tangled” She’s confident and can fight! Katara from “The last air bender” is also my fav! Tin Tin from “The Adventures of Tin Tin” too, he’s smart, brave a fighter and pure of heart, but cute too cause he can be a little naive. Woody too from “Toy Story” I’ve always loved him as a child.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? As cliche as it sounds, I would say my Father is the top of my list. He maybe strict but he’s someone I admire. How he carries the family and himself, a leader and a hard worker. He was the building block of what I am today(:
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Wow! I guess I would actually say Disney’s “Treasure Planet” It’s one seriously underrated movie, but it’s so beautiful, the animation, the art! it just blows you away! and I guess I would say Spirited away too(: beautiful story and animation
What role plays art in my life and work? Hmm tricky question I hope I can answer it correctly. I think the role of just being myself(: I can help bring art to my life by looking at things from a different perspective and thus bring it into the work I do.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Haha I would say, for this it’s my parents, partner and the few close friends I keep by my side(: and I’m grateful for them
Whom would I like to work with in 2019? Wow, it would be a dream come true to work with Disney, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, or Netflix’s Carmen Sandiago! either on their animated series or films, anything would be a dream come true really(:
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2019? I’d love to meet Glen Keane one day he’s someone I really look up too, for drawing and animation. Beautiful work.
What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on? I guess for me for now, is working on some of my own things(: taking the time to set some projects for myself.
Where can you see me or my work in 2019? On the net, like instagram or Pinterest, and hopefully maybe even a book? You can find me as @Violet1202 on those platforms(:
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? To me it means that it will always be a flame burning in your heart! and staying forever young.
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? I nominate my Friends

The Heroine’s Journey Conference – Paris

4th, 5th, 6th October 2019

What does it take to change a life? Many of us start by getting away – seeking out a place we have never been before, somewhere far away, with a fresh climate and an unexplored horizon – in the hope that a change of environment might lead to a change of perspective. Though diverting, our journeys are often fleeting, all too brief. We return to our regular routines – the same bad habits, the same implacable problems – and remain, at our core, unfulfilled.

Ten years ago, The Heroine’s Journey was set up to help people to answer some of the larger questions of their lives – questions about their careers, their purpose, their state of mind, and, most importantly, who they are as people. In 2016, we gathered together all that we had learned to create our first ever Conference – a condensation of the best of our wisdom and teaching into a highly exclusive, uniquely transformative three-day experience. Hosted twice a year in different cities across the globe, The Heroine’s Journey Conference offers delegates a chance to discover a new city, meet like-minded strangers, and embark on a journey of genuine self-discovery and self-transformation.

What to Expect

Over three days, The Heroine’s Journey Conference aims to provide us with a comprehensive personal storytelling education. It starts – as all journeys of self-improvement must – with the search for self-knowledge: how lasting change can only arise from a thorough understanding of our own minds. It addresses, in turn, our work, love and social lives: showing us the mistakes we commonly make, and the ways we can move past these to find pleasure and purpose in everything we do. It teaches us vital emotional skills, like confidence and calm, required to experience the world with patience and joy. It shows us the lessons we can draw from culture – from literature, art, philosophy, and architecture. Finally, it tries to answer the largest question of all – how to find meaning and lasting happiness in every area of our lives.

Our conference is both designed and led by The Heroine’s Journey founder, Peter de Kuster  – renowned expert in storytelling with a proven record in helping people across the world to understand themselves and find fulfilment. It compiles material from our entire curriculum – our core classes, one-day festivals, and five-day schools – to create a programme of the very best teaching we have to offer.

The Conference is not simply a series of lectures, or a passive presentation. Rather, it is a communal, multifaceted, interactive experience. It uses not only speech but films, music, and visual prompts to engage us with its concepts and message. Delegates are regularly invited to participate in exercises and demonstrations, and to share and seek advice for their own unique experiences.

Above all, the Conference is a social occasion – a place for thoughtful people from across the world to come together, share perspectives and ideas, and forge lasting connections with others. Specially designed conversational prompts, as well as morning and evening social activities, are used to encourage delegates to meet and relate. Many come away having made lifelong friendships – and sometimes even more.
