The Heroine’s Journey of Izumi Seki

What is the best thing that I love about my work? All my photos have been taken on the street. So everyday will be adventure for me and my camera buddy. And when the moment that I found beauty, it’s all there. It could be a smilling face, it could be a little flower in any corner. Beauty is everywhere, I just couldn’t be more grateful for God letting me meeting them, and to making every moment count.

What is my idea of happiness? To really appreciate the little details of our daily life.

What is my greatest fear? Thunder. No longer be able to love. (Well, I guess in that case I shall be dead at the same time.) So, thunder is it.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Wasn’t born in the era which either Sir. Charlie Chaplin or Mr. Yasujirō Ozu was around.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Mr. Jean-luc Godard, Mr. Jean-Jacques Annaud, Mr. Clint Eastwood, Mr. Wim wenders, Mr. Roger Deakins, Mr. Jim Jarmusch, Mr. Wayne Wang, Mr. Chow yun-fat, Mr. Wong kar-wai, Mr. Christopher Doyle, Mr. Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Madame Mabel Cheung, Madame Annie Leibovitz, Madame Kathryn Bigelow.

What is my greatest extravagance? Shoes.

On what occasion would I lie? When I felt that people might get hurt.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Don’t know about it yet. Hope I never will.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I meet those kind of moments like this…

If I could, what would I change about myself? Oh…I would absolutely like to use some kind of power like that and make sure that I will always be as I am. But maybe just less sentimental sometimes.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Still in progress.

Where would I most like to live? Still on the way looking. On the other hand, a few years ago I found a place where I would like to live my last day in this life. It’s Lausanne.

What is my most treasured possession? Love of my grandfather. I think we can never really love if we don’t have such an experience even for once that makes us feel like we are truly loved. For me, it was my grandfather who gave me that feeling. So I will take this irreplaceable treasure with me all my life, and make most of it.

What is my most marked characteristic? Basically I think I am the reincarnation of a cat in the human body.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? My current address is Minato-ku, Tokyo. But still on my way to find the place that I could finally call it “my city”. If you ask “in Japan”, I may be able to tell you one place or two. It’s the “Ise Grand Shrine” located in Ise, Mie Prefecture. And I love the whole Nara Prefecture.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? Not in “my city”, but in Tokyo, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo is the place.

What books influenced my life and how? “Anna karenina” by Leo Tolstoy. “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. ” For me, the little reality of our lives has all been said in the first sentence. “L’Amant” by Marguerite Duras. I read the book when I was about the same age with the “the young girl”, and we have become good friends ever since. About “how”, do we really know “how” we actually made friends at the first place? So…

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? A little bit of jazz, a little bit of blues, a little bit of chanson, a little bit of classic, a little bit of opera… “Ave maria” at the very end maybe.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Harry S. Stamper in “Armageddon”. Thelma & Louise in “Thelma & Louise”.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My grandfather. My high school history teacher Madame. Jinmei Hu. My Profressor in Graduate school Mr. Takahiro Watanabe. My boss Mr. Hirokazu Takahara, Mr. Toshitugu Nishio from the company I used to work for.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? “City light” by Sir. Charlie Chaplin.

What role play stories in my life and work? A cat with her camera travels around the world. A ghost helper.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? I guess after all we might can say that, in the way…

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Well, I kinda got a name in my head immediately when I saw this question. But since it’s “in crime”, then I can’t tell you. Cause we will never betray our friends.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2022? Mr. Patrick Bruneton, Mr. Gaël Zaks, Mr. Frederic Rivoal, Karamazov production (Mr. Louis-Ronan Choisy), Semalou-Studio (Mr. Remy Lafaurie).

What project, in 2022, am I looking forward to work on? In addition to taking pictures, I write prose and poetry, and I also paint and calligraphy sometimes. I looking forward to work on screenplays more (it would be wonderful if there’s someone to co-writer with me), and get more involved in film production.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? I think “passion” is something like spiritual and it’s already in our body before we were even born. And it might stay with our souls after our bodies are gone which just in case to cheer people up and let them know that they are not alone. So for me it’s nothing to do with “retires”.
