The Heroine’s Journey of Juman Daraghmeh

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

The freedom and the creativity in it, being creative is a great way of expressing yourself, it keeps you motivated, excited and looking for life experiences to give you the boost of inspiration to keep you energetically creative, which leads to the freedom of your soul and self.

The final result gives you a great relief, you finish your work, you portray your feelings and move on to the next.

Being an Artist\ Freelancer gives you the chance to be able to decide for yourself without anyone bossing you around; you are your own boss.

Art is the most universal form of communication.

What is my idea of happiness?

Being whole; doing the things I love, surrounded by loving souls and being my complete honest self flowing to where life takes me with a bit of navigation.

What is my greatest fear?

To fail, even though I know that each failure is a lesson, it still creeps me out. I’m afraid of going back. I always love to move forward even if it’s tiny steps, but a step forward is always needed. Going back to old habits that took me a while to detox is scary.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

Worrying! I always worry about things, I know I shouldn’t, deep down I’m sure that everything will be okay and happens for a reason whether it’s to lead you to somewhere new or to teach you a lesson.

Also it’s either I live in the past or in the future, I need to live in the present and appreciate each moment for what it is without planning ahead.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?

Gaspar Noé for writing and directing Enter the Void, it’s a great unique experimental film that talks about an American drug dealer living in Tokyo who is betrayed by his best friend and killed in a drug deal. The way of his soul, observing the repercussions of his death and seeking resurrection. – The colors, the way the film was edited is just different in a special way that makes you feel that you are the soul, it’s a piece of art that gives you a realistic hard story with no filtering.

Boho Beautiful – is a travel, yoga and lifestyle brand founded by Juliana Spicoluk and Mark Spicoluk creating positive content for the body, mind and earth.

Sama Abdulhadi -An emblematic artist of the Palestinian underground scene, SAMA’ is one of the first DJs and electronic music producers to emerge from the region.

What is my greatest extravagance?

I don’t have something specific, depending on what is in front of me and which mood I’m in.

On what occasion would I lie?

I try my best to avoid lying, but lately if I lie it’s mostly white lies to keep cool grounds.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

Having no stability and uncertainty even though I love it, but it becomes tiring, sometimes it’s great, everything is working out for you and sometimes it’s just dead, nothing is happening, and you have to search for new opportunities, new projects, figuring out how to live and cope with the ups and downs, the highs and lows, filling the extra time and living under stress and pressure.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

April 2022, I was leading a group of Palestinians in a program called Building walls breaking walls; it’s a program in Campo Cortoi in Ticino-Switzerland where Palestinians, Israeli’s, Swiss, Irish and Northern Irish live together for a week to build a physical stonewall in the amazing Swiss nature, talk about the conflict and present their countries to one another.

Being in a location like this is incredible; perfect view, mountain’s fresh air and a lot of trees, too good for the health, mind and body.

On top of that, being with like minded younger and older generations who have an open mind and heart to participate and take part in something special and life changing is awesome.

Words can’t describe it.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

I would want to care less, do and be whoever I want without considering or worrying about what others might think or say. Be more confident.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

My short film “With age comes Wisdom”, it summed up a period of my life. It helped me grow and pass a confusion, be a new me and fight for my beliefs and for who I want to be.

A trip to life – drawings collection;

A trip to life is created from 5 different colorful drawings, each drawing expresses a specific feeling of growth.

  • Lost inside:

Talks about the confusion that life throws at you, the bubble that you create for yourself to live in, that helps you ignore the actual reality and create your own reality to escape in.

  • Acting upon

It talks about the moment you start acting and doing things without actually      understanding why.

You do things to escape your own reality that you created for yourself, to leave your own bubble, you do things out of boredom and confusion.

Escaping your own reality.

  • Self regulation

Talks about the moment when you decide to explore yourself all over again, you enter a new bubble in your head to explore, learn, fight and grow. To have the ability to manage your emotions and behavior.

  • Breathing growth

Breathing growth is a piece that talks about the second you decide to breathe and learn instead of being too much in your own head and thoughts.

The second you decide to act instead of just thinking, the second you decide to grow!

To learn, to explore more and not give up, to fight the new reality, the one outside your own bubble and head.

To accept reality.

  • A while of freedom

A while of freedom is a piece of expanding, and growing.

Of being ready to face new challenges, ready to fight for your new reality, your new bubble.

Flying, expanding, exploring, growing and actually living.

These two achievements helped me a lot to cope with whatever I was going through, they were my way of learning, adjusting, confronting and facing.

Expressing them and letting them out of my system was what my body, health and mind needed.

Where would I most like to live?

In a cute modern house that has a nice garden and a view, away from the city but not too far. To have the peace and quiet needed plus an option of distraction and wildness which is not so far away.

What is my most treasured possession?

My drawing notebooks and hard drives, they store a lot of emotions and stories, they hold all of my secrets.

What is my most marked characteristic?

I speak too fast when I’m excited, I say too many things in one sentence, and if I’m stressed or in front of a crowd, I become shy that my words vanish.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?

Nas Harim, Ein karem area; It’s greeny, beautiful, chill, full of trees and fresh air, it refreshes me, gives me a moment of relief to go on and continue with my life.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city?

I don’t have a favorite place, it changes according to when and which period of my life, for this period of time it’s Bet hansen; the food isn’t the best but to drink something it’s pretty chill and nice.

What books influenced my life and how?

The alchemist; great book to give you hope and teach you that everything happens for a reason.

The subtle art of not giving a f*ck + everything is f*cked – Mark Manson.

These two books taught me alot, they were hard to read; it was hard for me to accept reality as it is, but indeed they have changed me.

The highly sensitive person – I am a sensitive person, this book helped me understand that there are others like me, and taught me alot about myself and of ways of coping with being sensitive in an un-sensitive world.

The power is within you – an amazing book to help you gain authentic power, and have a deeper meaning in and of life.

The seat of the soul – Haven’t finished it yet, but it’s just incredible!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day?

The long run – Bloom.

Tie that Binds – Drake.

I may have lied to you – Sizar.

Bicicleta- Lapola kalu.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?

Jake Sully in Avatar, he is a Hero in my eyes because he was on a mission to kill and destroy someone’s else’s land\life to take it over, until he understood and put himself in their shoes, lived with them, adopted their love, connections and traditions to the land, which made it hard for him to take it away and destroy it.

  • A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?

Everyone is a hero in his\her own way, life isn’t easy, it needs a lot of authentic power and self belief to cope with it.

All of those women who fought for their possessions, values and selves, who changed the concept of what a woman is supposed to do or meant to be and gave the freedom for the newer generations to continue with this change.

And for all of those men who are trying their best to be “strong enough”, to live the standard of life of what a male should do to become a man.

Also for all of those who are hiding their identities or sexual self to be accepted in their cultures and families.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime?

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody.

Requiem for a dream.

Inception.

Tv Series: 1899

The sinner.

What role play stories in my life and work?

The people I admire the most and look up to, the people I feel that I need to learn from, let their story help my journey. Those who inspire me, those who are honest and real, strong and always working towards a better goal, self and adds light to our humanity and supports it.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ mean to me?

You are the one who navigates your story, each decision leads to a new direction, a new chapter in your never ending story, your story changes with time; when you are in it, it differs from when you look back at it, it’s either you add words and conclusions to it or you erase things that reminds you of times you got over.

You can choose to look at the positive or the negative parts of it, you can decide whether to be a hero or a victim, it’s all in your hands, it is not easy but it is achievable.

You are also part of other people’s stories, each story knows a different version of you.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

My amazing partner, friends and family! Each supports in a different way. They make me feel happy, supported and loved. They affect me in a very positive way.

Which people or companies would I like to work with? (you can mention a maximum of 10 people and/or companies who could make a real difference in your creative career. I will invite them to tell their story, tell them you mentioned their name and send them your story)

Sama Abdulhadi; I would love to create visual content that can be screened with her music.

Juliana Spicoluk and Mark Spicoluk I admire the content they create, they touch your soul with their content and it would be a pleasure for me to be a part of this. Maybe become their editor or the photographer.

I don’t actually know who else, I am more into creating my own company or business. I want to be a person who touches people’s souls, who affects humanity in a positive way whether it’s with Video, music or arts. I want to create my own pop up gallery that supports young artists and gives them hope, that makes the audience ask themselves questions and smile, that touches people.

To create something new, different and unique, to support a cause that is underrated.

What project am I looking forward to working on?

I want to create a new video art\ experimental that talks about the Cycle of life; I always wondered what’s life all about? It’s a cycle that never ends, it’s a loop of motion. We are born into a world where you are raised by your parents the same way they were raised by their parents with a tiny change, but we all follow the same rules of life. You grow up following your family and it’s values, then you have to go to school to learn (you better be one of the smart kids, so your parents will be proud of you), and after that you better continue your education and attend colleges or universities and get as many degrees as you can, so you can work after it, and make a lot of money to be successful in “life”, buy whatever you want, attract whoever you want and then build a family together to raise your kids the same way you were raised by your parents, and so on, it goes in circles.

Living in the cycle of life made me feel trapped, until now I feel that we are controlled by Capitalism, they control our minds, control the media, control what we see, even what we feel.

The only way out of it for me was to believe that I don’t have to follow these rules, I can create my own life and journey, and connect to my soul and spiritual journey.
