The Heroine’s Journey of Dipanjali Pal

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I’ve always been fascinated with language and words, I love the way they help build a world. People from all around the world are connected with this very notion of language and what better way to get to know more people and their world than using the very language as a tool? Writing is an integral part of the language and has opened several horizons and has helped me connect with people. I think this has been the best side of being a writer.

What is my idea of happiness? A warm cup of tea and a day with my family! It doesn’t get better than this.

What is my greatest fear? I think it entails making someone unhappy or unintentionally hurting them. Though I’d say darkness is a strong second.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I struggle with perfecting things till there’s nothing left anymore to perfect. I think it takes away a lot from my time when I could have done something more productive.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? I admire a lot of great personalities who have been important figures in literature and writing. I think it’s very hard to choose one specific person. However, I must mention all the women who have pioneered in the field making it a safe space for so many writers like me who have always inspired me.

What is my greatest extravagance? If I were to identify my greatest extravagance, it would undoubtedly be movies. I spend quite a lot of time watching them and I think time is one of the most valuable things a person possesses.

On what occasion would I lie? I think I’d lie to protect someone’s feelings but I think ‘Honesty is the best policy’ holds a lot of weight!

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? While writing can be my solace and helps me the best to express my thoughts and my world, I’d say it has its own drawbacks. Especially the time when there’s writer’s block! I’m still finding a way to avoid or help myself to deal better with big writer’s block.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? The first time my writing was published I couldn’t stop obsessing over the number of readers and comments I was getting. It was truly the happiest moment in my entire journey.

If I could, what would I change about myself? If this was asked me a year back I’d have said a lot of things but as I grow older I think there’s not much I’d like to change. Since in that case, that person won’t be me but rather someone else.

What is my greatest achievement in work? My greatest achievement is all the love my readers showed me!

Where would I most like to live? I think I’d really like to live in the world of Jujutsu Kiasen, my favorite anime.

What is my most treasured possession? My laptop! It’s my best friend who knows all my ideas, work, and everything I love.

What is my most marked characteristic? I’d like to think about my kindness but I also think it’s not a place for me to say it but rather people in my surroundings.

What is the most inspirational location, in my city? Has to be my bedroom because all my ideas stem while I’m on my bed.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? I like to explore a lot of food, but I think a café called “Blue Mug” holds a lot of special memories for me. A dear friend of mine introduced me to it and since then the café has been a part of my college days.

What books influenced my life and how? A lot of Bengali literature that I grew up reading shaped me as a person. One such novel is the 1964 novel called “Prothom Protisurti” or The First Promise by Ashapurna Devi. I consider it to be a very impactful novel that showcases a very real, authentic, and inspiring journey of a young girl.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Hopefully my specially created Spotify playlist for exactly this scenario which I by the way thought of countless times!

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I think I as a writer and reader hold a lot of attachment to characters which are figments of the imagination of a human’s mind which is incredible to think of. However, I don’t necessarily have a hero or heroine in fiction.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My mom and My dad!

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? I want everyone to explore the beautiful world of Satyajit Ray, a very prolific Bengali director whose works are famous worldwide. One of his must watch is “Pather Panchali”

What role play stories in my life and work? A very interesting question, which I’d like to interpret in the way I understand it. Stories have always been and always will be the first thing a writer searches for in a situation, person, or surrounding.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? These words are very important because often times if not always we are so restricted by our own thoughts that we forget it’s us who are thinking and building all these scenarios which is stopping us from having our best life. I always think life is too short so we should live in the moment but of course, we should always adhere to the reality we belong in.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My best friend who has been by my side since I was 15! And my little sister.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? It simply means even when I’m 70 or 80 you’ll catch me writing new stories on my beloved laptop.

Which creative professionals should Peter invite to tell their story? I think every woman who is hardworking and passionate regardless of their field deserves to be heard and their stories would be perfect for a journal like this.
