The Heroine’s Journey of Nicole Meeuws

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
The freedom it brings. My world is a canvas, painted in bold, vibrant colors that reflect the joy I feel inside. I steer clear of black, beige, or grey—they’re not colors, they’re moods. Life is meant to be colorful, rich, and unapologetically bright. I cherish the confidence to create without boundaries, letting my intuition guide me like a fearless compass.

What is my idea of happiness?
Happiness is barefoot simplicity. It’s walking sandy Greek roads to a quiet beach, warmed by the sun and a cup of Yorkshire tea. It’s the gentle nuzzle of my two dogs, and the steady, inspiring presence of a husband who is my best friend and muse. Together, they are my sanctuary, my joy, and my everyday miracle.

What is my greatest fear?
That humanity stays asleep—blind to its true potential. There is so much more to us than meets the eye: a deep connection to the ether, the water, and the infinite mysteries that surround us. It pains me to think we might never wake up to our shared brilliance.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
Laziness, when it strikes. Sometimes I lack drive, stuck in the mundane until inspiration jolts me awake. When this happens, I go searching: wandering into art galleries, striking up conversations with strangers, or sitting quietly in a café, watching life unfold. It always works.

Which living person in my profession do I most admire?
Stefano Bosis, an Italian painter in Berlin. He lives for his art, spending 70% of his time in his atelier, living simply yet profoundly. His soul radiates creativity, and I just know he will one day be celebrated as one of the greats.

What is my greatest extravagance?
My freedom. I’ve built my life on an island in the Cyclades, where nature reigns and the old ways linger. It’s wild, untamed, and deeply connected to the earth. Here, I prioritize living as my soul intends: deeply, authentically, and freely.

On what occasion would I lie?
Perhaps if I’d eaten one too many pieces of chocolate—but beyond that, lying is not in my nature. Truth is the foundation of who we are. To lie is to distort your soul, stifling your ability to shine. We are flames, meant to ignite inspiration in others. Truth is our spark.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
The idea that art should follow trends. Trends are for sheep; artists are meant to roam free. I create what I feel, without concern for the fleeting whims of the world. True art is born of authenticity, not conformity.

When and where was I the happiest in my work?
At a gallery, standing by my painting, when an Italian artist approached me, his words as dramatic as a Fellini film. “I’m so happy to see this here,” he said, pointing at my work. I blushed. For the first time, I felt seen by someone who understood the language of art. It reminded me how small gestures of appreciation can mean everything.

If I could, what would I change about myself?
I tried once—with plastic surgery—and it almost destroyed me. The recovery was a grueling four-year journey of healing, trust, and surrender. It taught me the power of self-belief and faith in something greater than myself. That experience reshaped me far more than anything physical ever could.

What is my greatest achievement in work?
Seeing my art worn at the National Art Gallery in New York felt surreal. Yet, in truth, achievements are fleeting. What matters more is the connection my work creates—the moments when someone truly sees it and feels something shift inside. I am also writing my own autobiography right now, with beautiful illustrations. it’s not ready yet, but it will be quite an unusual book to have, watch this space.

Where would I most like to live?
Exactly where I am. I’ve traveled the world—from Israel to Africa, the Middle East to Europe—and met extraordinary souls along the way. But this island feels like home, for now. I don’t dream of destinations; I go where creation takes me.

What is my most treasured possession?
My two dogs, Amee and Lilly. Lilly is blind, yet she sees more than most. They’ve been my companions for 12 years, through every joy and sorrow. They are my heart, my family, and my purpose in the simplest, truest form.

What is my most marked characteristic?
I see everyone as a friend, a reflection of family. Perhaps it’s because I’ve known pain and struggle; it’s given me the ability to understand and connect with others deeply.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
The turquoise waters of Greece. All you need is a towel, a sun umbrella, and the cool embrace of the sea. Water is life, a reminder of everything essential.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?
My husband’s kitchen. Every dish he creates is art, crafted with care and love. He’s a nurturer, a rare gem, and his cooking is my daily feast of joy.

What books influenced my life and how?
Jung’s The Red Book cracked open the mysteries of the mind and spirit for me.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day?
My husband’s music: “Christos Mythos – Mary Jane (Let Your Spirit Fly)” on YouTube. His work captures the essence of my soul.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?
Our Creator—the ultimate author of everything we experience. Life itself is the masterpiece.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime?
Where Dreams May Come and the Brazilian film Astral City. Both explore the depths of the soul and the boundless nature of existence.

What role do stories play in my life and work?
Stories are everything. They inspire me, challenge me, and shape my understanding of the world.

What do the words “You are the storyteller of your own life” mean to me?
It means this life is mine to write—complete with twists, turns, and a bit of theatrical flair.
