The Heroine’s Journey of Agnieszka Ejsymont

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love the moment when a blank canvas stops being just fabric and becomes a living space full of emotions and stories. I love that magical “in-between” state – when my hand paints faster than my mind can catch up with my heart.

What is my idea of happiness? Happiness is waking up in the morning and feeling excited about what I’ll create today. It’s the smell of turpentine, music playing in the background, and that little laugh when something on the canvas turns out better than I planned.

What is my greatest fear? Emptiness. Not the one on the canvas, but the one inside. A lack of inspiration, emotional numbness… the moment when colors stop talking to me.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Impatience. I wish I could let my paintings breathe longer… but my brush often moves faster than reason.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? I admire artists who are not afraid to combine classical techniques with modern expression – like Jenny Saville or Anselm Kiefer. Artists who paint not only with colors but with courage.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? When someone asks: “So… how much did the paint cost?” or “This painting thing… is just a hobby, right?”

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? At one of my exhibitions, when I saw a person staring at my painting… with tears in their eyes. That’s when I felt I’d created something meaningful.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I would let go of perfectionism and leave more ‘space to breathe’ – in both my art and my life

What is my greatest achievement in work? Creating my own recognizable artistic style – and the fact that my paintings live in people’s homes… from kitchens to law offices

Where would I most like to live? Where the light feels painterly all year round… Maybe Tuscany? Or my beloved Baltic Sea in Poland.

What is my most treasured possession? My first, completely worn-out paintbrush. The one that painted more emotion than detail.

What is my most marked characteristic? Energy. And the fact that I talk about colors the way others talk about feelings.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The old market square at dawn. The city still sleeps, and I watch the light waking up

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? A small café overlooking the park – where they serve the best coffee and I can sketch on napkin

What books influenced my life and how? “Letters to Theo” by van Gogh – for the courage to speak about weakness. My favorite book is the Bible. It gives me hope and faith

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day? “Cinema Paradiso” of Ennio Morricone. Full Power. Dancing Between the Easels.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Amélie Poulain – for her tenderness towards everyday moment

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Every woman who – against all odds – found time and strength to create… even late at night, between kids, work, and life

Jesus Christ for His love for people

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? “Pollock” – to understand that talent is often more pain than glamour.

What role do stories play in my life and work? Every painting is a story. I paint because sometimes words are not enough.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ mean to me? That no one else should decide what colors appear on my palette.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My loved ones. Those who keep hanging my paintings… even when their walls ran out of space.

Which people or companies would I like to work with? Contemporary art galleries, publishers of art books, boutique hotels wanting authentic art on their walls… and maybe, one day – Vogue, for a special cover art project.

What project am I looking forward to work on? My own large-format exhibition in an industrial space – with light, sound, and audiences from every possible field.

Where can you see me or my work?
On my social media, in private art collections… and even on refrigerators – as art magnets

What do the words ‘Passion Never Retires’ mean to me?
That even at 90, I’ll still be holding a paintbrush… even if with shaky hands.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? My fellow female artists – painters, graphic designers, photographers – who show every day that art is not just a profession, but a way of living.
