The Heroine’s Journey of Jaya Clement

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

The thing I love most about my work is the quiet moment when it’s just me and the screen,  usually far too late at night. Away from expectations, validation, and the pressure of the next ‘big thing,’ I can finally slow down and admire what I’ve created. In those moments, I’m reminded why I do this, not for attention, but for the satisfaction of seeing my hard work and passion come to life.

What is my idea of happiness?

I don’t measure happiness through material success, but through the richness of my experiences. A life well-lived, full of growth, connection, and exploration, is what brings me happiness.

What is my greatest fear?

My greatest fear is not having a sense of community. The people around me (my friends and family) ground me, motivate me and give meaning to what I do. Their support fuels my passions, and without that shared love and connection, I don’t think I would pursue my goals with the same courage or conviction.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

I think about things too much, rather than just doing it. I often linger in the endless possibilities of ‘what ifs’, and second guessing my instincts that are usually right the first time. This habit sometimes slows my momentum and dilutes my confidence.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

I most admire people in my profession who remain authentic to themselves. Those who embed their personal ‘isms’ into commercial work or consistently follow through with passion projects inspire me deeply. Their ability to sustain individuality while navigating industry expectations is something I respect and aspire to be.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

The night before a shoot is what I dislike most. I’m usually tossing and turning, running through every possible scenario. Even then, the nerves are often mixed with excitement. I often stay awake picturing how cool the shoot is going to be!

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

The happiest I’ve been in my work was at the beginning, when I first arrived at ELAM. I didn’t yet have the technical skills, but I had imagination, excitement, and a genuine hunger to create. I miss that version of myself. She was less polished, but more playful, and completely filled with ideas.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

I tend to overthink, which means many projects stay stored in my head instead of coming to life. However, I’m slowly unlearning this by allowing myself to create instinctively and worry about refinement afterwards.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

Working at Universal Music Group. Statistically, I didn’t ‘belong there’. I was straight out of college and it was my first ‘big girl job’. Also, as neurodivergent black and indigenous girl, who’s family is convinced that she’s ’off with the fairies’, who would’ve known that I’d be working at the largest music company in the world, freshly being 18?

Where would I most like to live?

If you asked anyone who’s spoken to me in the past year, they’d tell you I’m constantly debating between Australia, Ireland, or Saint Lucia. Each place represents a different version of the life I imagine for myself. That said, no matter how far my mind travels, I’m undeniably an East London babe at heart. My loyalty to it is almost patriotic. Though knowing me, this answer could change by tomorrow and I’ll be right back to singing Saint Lucia’s praises.

What is my most treasured possession?

My most treasured possession is a Sekhmet necklace I wear all the time. It acts as a good luck charm and carries personal meaning, symbolising my journey and my connection to Egyptian mythology.

What is my most marked characteristic?

Sarcasm is my most defining trait. It’s how I communicate, bond with my friends, and navigate the world.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?

My most inspirational place in the city isn’t a single destination, but the number 8 bus. Sitting by the window at night, watching the city pass by, feels endlessly inspiring. It’s a space where I think about ambition, about making it. In winter especially, with Christmas lights glowing and everyone wrapped up in layers, the city feels alive and stylish in a way that fuels my creativity.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?

My favourite place to eat and drink is my mother’s house! Can you believe I’ve never ordered off a take away app before…?

What books influenced my life and how?

All of Jacqueline Wilson’s books influenced me deeply. Her writing spoke in a childlike voice while addressing very real, adult themes. At a formative time in my life, her stories helped me process complex emotions in a way that felt safe and accessible. Her books were a source of comfort and understanding when I needed it most.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?

On my last day, I’d listen to soca. My Saint Lucian roots wouldn’t have it any other way!

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?

My hero in fiction is Medusa. She was dealt a harsh fate, but she took control of her story and made the best of it, showing resilience, strength, and defiance in the face of adversity.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?

My heroes and heroines are the unsung ones. They do the right thing simply because it’s right, and their kindness and generosity inspire me daily.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?

I’d recommend Shark Tale. On the surface it’s a children’s film, but underneath it explores identity, status, family, and the pressure to conform while being wrapped in a Y2K energy.  I watched it obsessively on DVD, and it shaped how I view success and self-worth more than I realised at the time.

What role play stories in my life and work?

Stories and fiction play a huge role in my life and work because they allow me to step into other people’s shoes. One of the things I love most about life is learning from others, and experiencing new perspectives through fiction is endlessly eye opening. It teaches me empathy, challenges my assumptions, and inspires me to see the world, and my own work, in richer ways.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me?

To me, “You are the storyteller of your own life” means that even if the tools you’ve been given aren’t perfect, and even if your first chapter was already written, you still have the power to shape your story. Life may hand you circumstances you didn’t choose, but you can write with what you have and make it truly your own.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

I’m my own biggest fan, always pushing myself forward and supporting my ideas. But here comes Talia… She boxes up my concepts, ‘Taliafies’ them, and turns them into something cuter, bolder, or just more chaotic

Which people or companies would I like to work with ?

I want to collaborate with anyone chasing their creative passions, especially in punk, experimental, Y2K or playful spaces. We’re here to make cinema fun again, challenge conventions, and leave our mark!

What project am I looking forward to work on?

The project I’m looking forward to most is MENtality. It’s my take on society’s view of men and how dating shows play with those extremes. I went full blown with the concept, and Talia took it to another level of chaos. The script’s ready and your excitement is guaranteed!

Peter should invite creative professionals who are deeply passionate, even if they haven’t fully mastered their craft yet. Often, the most compelling stories come from those whose dedication and vision drive them forward, even in the absence of polished skills.
