The Heroine’s Journey of Yael Cherni

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The alchemy of collaboration — when minds, hearts, and rhythms align to create something that didn’t exist before.

What is my idea of happiness? Slow mornings, deep conversations, movement, laughter, and a night that ends in candlelight and jazz.

What is my greatest fear? To wake up one day and realize I’ve stopped being curious.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Avi Binyamin, Matthew Rhys, Ohad Naharin, Riccardo Chailly, Gabriel Byrne, the Coen Brothers, Joe Weisberg, Chris Long, Stephen Daldry, Philip Martin, Julian Jarrold, Sebastian Koch and Peter Morgan.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The waiting. The endless, soul-numbing waiting between sparks.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? In a tiny rehearsal room in Berlin, with a pianist who played like he was reading my thoughts.

If I could, what would I change about myself? My lack of patience.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Creating a moment on stage that made someone in the audience feel truly and fully alive.

Where would I most like to live? A place where I can walk through snowy hills, surrounded by animals and a fireplace, hear music from open windows, and speak at least three languages before breakfast.

What is my most treasured possession? My scores.

What is my most marked characteristic? Intensity.

What is my most inspirational location in my city? Gesher Theatre.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink in my city? A hidden courtyard in Neve Tzedek where the wine is always slightly too warm and the conversations are always too long.

What books influenced my life and how Great philosophers such as Appleton, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche shaped my thinking.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day? Can’t talk about that.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Nora from A Doll’s House — for walking out and choosing herself.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Women who live their lives fully, on their own terms.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? Miller’s Crossing.

What role do stories play in my life and work? They’re how I make sense of chaos. They’re how I remember who I am.

What do the words “You are the storyteller of your own life” mean to me? That I can influence, though not control, the course of life. That I can choose my style and genre — but it’s essential to stay humble.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My best friend — who reminds me who I am when I forget.

Where can you see me or my work? On stage, in rehearsal rooms, in late-night bars where someone’s playing live. And soon — on screen. Website: yaelcherni.com

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? That the fire doesn’t care about your age, your résumé, or your bank account. It just wants you to keep dancing.
