The Heroine’s Journey of Esra Abacioğlu Akcan

What ignited your passion for this work?

Music captivated me from a very early age. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the power of the human voice to touch people’s hearts. Over time, I discovered that opera is much more than music; it is a unique art form that brings together theater, literature, history, and human emotions. This discovery became the greatest motivation behind my decision to pursue a professional career as an opera singer.

What was your biggest breakthrough moment?

I have experienced many important milestones in my career, but performing the role of Violetta in La Traviata was a particularly significant turning point. This role challenged me both technically and emotionally. While experiencing the character’s transformation on stage, I felt that I was also reaching a new level of maturity as an artist.

What’s the greatest challenge you’ve overcome?

An opera career requires lifelong discipline and dedication. Constantly developing, studying works in different languages, and remaining physically and mentally prepared demand great commitment. My greatest challenge has been maintaining the same passion while continually reinventing myself throughout the years. Even today, I approach every new work as a student eager to learn.

When did you feel most alive in your work?

I feel most alive during those moments in performance when I establish an invisible connection with the audience. The few seconds when music, words, and emotions merge into a single breath are the moments when I truly experience the power of art.

Which story, book, or film shaped your path?

It is difficult to choose just one work. However, the strong female characters in the opera repertoire have always inspired me. In particular, Violetta from La Traviata has been a source of inspiration because of her courage, sacrifice, and the way she reveals both the strength and vulnerability of the human spirit.

Who’s your hero/heroine (fiction or real life)?

One of the people who has inspired me most is Leyla Gencer. Her success in representing Turkish opera on international stages is deeply meaningful to me. I have also always admired Maria Callas for her dedication to her art and Cheryl Studer for her musical excellence.

How do stories fuel your creative process?

I begin by deeply analyzing the character I portray. Understanding the emotional world, motivations, and transformation of an operatic character is essential to my artistic process. I am also greatly inspired by real-life events and historical context. The historical development behind a story helps shape not only my interpretation of the role but also the way I express it musically and dramatically on stage. For me, every performance is an opportunity to bring a character’s truth to life.

What does “You are the storyteller of your life” mean to you?

This phrase reminds me of both responsibility and freedom. We cannot always choose what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond. Throughout my artistic journey, the decisions I have made, the roles I have embraced, and the challenges I have faced have all become chapters of my own story. To me, this means having the courage to follow your passions and consciously shape your own path.

Who’s been your greatest champion/collaborator?

Throughout my professional journey, two people have had a profound impact on my artistic development: Gölge Şekeramber and Kammersängerin Prof. Margarita Lilova. Their guidance, support, and belief in my potential helped shape me both as a musician and as a performer. I am deeply grateful for their mentorship and inspiration.

What does “Passion Never Retires” mean to you?

For me, passion is not something tied to age or a particular stage of life. It is a lifelong source of energy, curiosity, and purpose. As an artist, I continue to learn, discover, and grow with every new role and every new performance. Passion keeps us moving forward and reminds us that creativity has no expiration date.

Which movie captures your journey best?

If I were to choose one film, it would be The Red Shoes. It reflects the devotion, discipline, and sacrifices that a life in the performing arts often requires. The film beautifully portrays the deep connection between an artist and their calling, which resonates strongly with my own journey.

Where can people experience your work now?

People can experience my work through live performances, concert projects, and recordings available online. I have released two albums, which reflect different stages of my artistic journey and my passion for storytelling through music. Listeners can find my recordings on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube, and other major streaming platforms. They can also follow my upcoming projects, performances, and recordings through my website and social media channels.
