Great Stories, Great Cities

Great Stories, Great Cities

Travel through the stories of a city. Discover your story. Create your happily ever after—in life and business.

What can Paris teach you about courage? What can Florence reveal about creativity and ambition? What can Shakespeare’s London teach you about leadership, power and human relationships? And what can Amsterdam’s stories of freedom and enterprise inspire you to do differently?

A city is more than a collection of streets, buildings and monuments. It is a living library of human stories: stories of ambition, love, conflict, creativity, failure, courage and transformation.

At The Hero’s Journey and The Heroine’s Journey, we travel through the stories of a city to discover what those stories can teach us about our own lives and work.

We walk the streets where history happened. We explore the worlds of great writers, artists, entrepreneurs and visionaries. We encounter stories in museums, cinemas, theatres, bookshops, historic buildings and public spaces.

Then we connect what we discover to the questions that matter in our own lives.

A richly illustrated Parisian diagram maps dramatic situations, intrigues, and archetypal characters.

What makes us happy? What gives our work meaning? What kind of leader do we want to become? How can teams work together more effectively? What kind of business or organisation is worth building?

Our starting point is simple:

Every great story contains the elements of your story.

Our unique model: 12 Characters. 7 Plots. 36 Dramatic Situations. 2 Endings.

Wherever we travel, we use the same four-part model to turn the stories of a city into a practical learning experience.

1. The 12 Characters: Discover the people who shape your story

Cities are full of characters whose lives reveal different ways of thinking, leading, creating, loving and overcoming adversity.

As we encounter them, we explore the roles people play in our own lives and professional journeys.

Who inspires you? Who challenges you? Who helps you grow? What kind of leader, colleague, professional or entrepreneur do you want to become?

2. The 7 Plots: Discover the journey you are on

A city’s stories reveal recurring journeys: pursuing an ambition, overcoming adversity, searching for identity, discovering a new world or transforming the way we live and work.

We use these plots to examine our own direction.

What story are you living now? What are you trying to achieve? Is your current journey taking you towards the life and work you want?

3. The 36 Dramatic Situations: Discover new ways to face challenges

Great cities preserve stories of difficult decisions, rivalries, betrayals, sacrifices, unexpected opportunities and turning points.

By exploring how people in these stories responded to their challenges, we gain new perspectives on the situations we face ourselves.

What is the real challenge? What choices are available? What can you learn from the decisions of others?

4. The 2 Endings: Discover what “happily ever after” means to you

Many stories lead us towards a question: will the characters find happiness, fulfilment or success?

One of the two endings in our model is the timeless promise:

“They lived happily ever after.”

But happiness means different things to different people.

For a professional, it might mean meaningful work and a career that makes the most of their talents. For a leader, it might mean building a team that flourishes. For an entrepreneur, it might mean creating a successful business without losing sight of what makes life worth living.

For an organisation, it might mean achieving business success while creating value for its people and customers.

As we travel through a city’s stories, we ask: what would a happy ending look like for you, your team or your organisation—and what choices could help you move towards it?

One city. Many stories. New possibilities.

These are examples of how the model can be applied. Each destination experience should be developed around the stories, places and activities actually included in that journey.

Learn by travelling. Discover by reflecting. Grow by doing.

Our approach combines the richness of cultural travel with the practical purpose of personal and professional development.

You do not simply hear a story. You encounter it in the city where it took place or where its meaning comes alive. You explore its characters, recognize its plot, examine its dramatic situations and consider its possible endings. Then you connect those discoveries to your own questions and ambitions.

The city makes the story tangible. The story gives you a new perspective. Our model helps you apply that perspective to your life and work.

Your life and work are stories still being written.

The world’s great cities are filled with examples of people who pursued dreams, faced adversity, made difficult choices and created futures they could not initially imagine.

Their stories cannot tell you exactly how to live. They can help you see your own situation differently, question assumptions and discover possibilities.

That is the purpose of The Hero’s Journey and The Heroine’s Journey: to help you understand the story you are living, discover what happiness and success mean to you, and create your next chapter.

Great Stories, Great Cities. Travel the stories of the world. Discover your own story. Create your happily ever after—in life and business.
