The Heroine’s Journey of Sharon Hart-Green

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

I love those rare magical moments when a phrase or image seems to appear out of nowhere while I am writing. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it is as if it has descended from heaven!

What is my idea of perfect happiness?

My entire family loves to sing, especially around the dinner table on Friday nights. Perfect happiness to me is when we are all together singing at the top of our lungs.

What is my greatest fear?

My greatest fear is not having the strength to cope with loss. I guess that is why I often write about those who seem to be able to muster the will to survive courageously.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

I hate the fact that I tend to worry too much about what people think of my work. I wish I didn’t care. It’s something I definitely need to overcome!

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

I admire those rare individuals who are both great writers and deep thinkers, such as Cynthia Ozick and Marilynne Robinson.

What is my greatest extravagance?

I love to travel and stay anywhere near water.

On what occasion would I lie?

I would lie at the drop of a hat in order to spare someone’s feelings, especially those I care about most deeply.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

I dislike the fact that words come to me slowly and sparingly when I write. I wish that words would tumble out of me, rather than having to be extracted gently and with agonizing slowness.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

I was happiest when I was at that middle point in writing my novelafter each of the main characters seemed to take on a life of their own.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

I would like to be more self-disciplined about establishing a set time for writing each day. I tend to write in sporadic bursts, and then I often put it aside for days (or even weeks!) before returning to it.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

Hearing that people are reading (and deriving meaning from) my novel.

Where would I most like to live?

I would love to live beside a body of water and listen to the waves while I (day) dream.

What is my most treasured possession?

I treasure the small silver cups brought over from Europe by my mother’s parents. The cups are etched with tiny engravings depicting small town life. Whenever I use the cups, I think of my grandparents and the town they left behind.

What is my most marked characteristic?

No question: Tenacity.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?

Ward’s Island, located just south of downtown Toronto, accessible only by ferry.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?

My favourite place is Marron Bistro in mid-town Toronto. I love their mango martini!

What books influenced my life and how?

The books that changed my life were those I read during that critical period between adolescence and adulthood. They were The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky, I and Thou by Martin Buber, and Twenty-One Stories by S.Y. Agnon.

Who are my favorite writers?

Jane Austen is my all time favourite writer of fiction. I also love the work of Dickens, Tolstoy, Flaubert, George Eliot, and many others too numerous to name.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?

Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. I admire her intelligence, wit, and ability to admit when she is wrong.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?

Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Theodor Herzl, Natan Sharansky. All of them were mocked for pursuing goals that seemed impossible to achieve. Yet they persevered and won.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?

The Best Years of Our Lives

What role does art play in my life and work?

I love to surround myself with beautiful things (in the broadest sense of the term). That means that I enjoy collecting unique decorative objects, pieces of art, as well as music that soothes the soul.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

My husband Ken, no question about it!

Whom would I like to work with in 2019?

I would love to work with a filmmaker who has the vision to adapt my novel for film (Are you listening, Steven Spielberg?)

Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2019?

Cynthia Ozick, Marilynne Robinson (see remarks above)

What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on?

I am writing a new novel about a young man with mystical inclinations who is in search of love.
