The Heroine Journey of Clotilde Rullaud

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

To travel and meet artists through the prism of arts. Music and art in general are such an incomparable way to meet people from different cultures, to truly and deeply share with them.

What is my idea of happiness?

At this very precise moment I’m writing, my idea of happiness is having friends paying me an unplanned visit at my house in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina-Faso) to share a tea and discuss art, listening to music in the declining sun. And time going on, they would stay and share diner and talks about art and vivid though always benevolent conversations about the world we are living in, its transformations and how it impacts creation. And we would end this gathering, playing music and singing to the moon.

However, I think I always feel happiness spending time contemplating nature : trees, flowers, butterflies. I’m amazed by the “ugly beauty” of nature, this tender mix of cruelty and absolute beauty.

What is my greatest fear?

My greatest fear is to not be ready at the very second to go on stage. I even regularly dream vivid and extremes nightmares of it! For example, last time a truck crashed the backstage 2 minutes before the show

Well I’m quite content with what I am, even if I am aware that I still have many things to learn and improve to reach a higher degree of self-awareness.

Any creation. To make a dream come true is so special and particularly because there is 100% of DIY in my work.

Where would I most like to live?

Well I actually can’t name a place. After a few months at the same place I usually need to move again. Though I feel super comfortable in many areas of the world (NYC, Geneva, Bobo-Dioulasso, Paris, Melbourne) for various reasons. Sometimes it is for the quality of life, sometimes for the artistic stimulation, sometimes for family bounds, always because of true and deep friendship though. I ended up starting to believe that I’m some kind of nomadic person!

What is my most treasured possession?

Well this is not an easy question to answer to.

I am not a person of “the haves”. I don’t possess much things but some instruments and books. They are extremely important to me but I’m not sure I could say they are treasured. I “have” friends and relatives that I do treasure. But it wouldn’t be accurate to say I possess them! haha!

People use to say I am a caring and sharing person and a loyal friend. I like to believe they are true.

As I said earlier, I can’t really locate “my city”. So in Paris, I would say that the most inspirational location is in coffees, watching people. In NYC, I would say the streets of East Village / Lower East side. In Geneva, a place by the lake called “Les Paquis”. And in Bobo-Dioulasso, my garden.

They are too numerous! If I should pick-up one in each city I’m spending most of my time, I would say in Paris Les Pères Populaires in the 20th arrondissement. In NYC, I would say the Lazy Lama coffee on 1st avenue and the Vietnamese restaurant near bye. In Geneva, a place by the lake called “Les Paquis”. And in Bobo-Dioulasso, a beer garden close to « la Maison de la Culture ».

I love reading, I love to put images on the words I read. Therefore each reading is influential since it makes me undergo various feelings, thoughts and situations that lead me to grow.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?

I’d say “As” from Stevie Wonder, and particularly the cover of it by Gene Harris. This song always re-appeared in my life during hard times when I would spend days playing it on a loop as a remedy.

I’m extremely excited with the release of 2 upcoming albums which were the 2020/2021 projects the pandemic postponed.

Pieces of a song, a duo with the keyboardist Chris McCarthy based in NYC. It is a repertoire of original songs between rage and ecstasy infused with the poetry of the great poetess of the beat generation Diane Di Prima.

Eastern spring with Madeleine & Salomon, a duo we form with Alexandre Saada. This new repertoire is our minimalistic lecture of great Mediterranean pop standards of the sixties and seventies

I’m really looking forward to a collaboration with Gilles Viandier, a friend, dancer and choreographer, on his multidisciplinary creation implying dance, music and animated drawing. And it’s dealing with the Green color.

I’m also super excited with keeping on developing an upcoming musical project in collaboration with Burkinabe musicians.
