The Heroine’s Journey of Peggy Philips

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Storytelling validates our existence.

What is my idea of happiness? Accepting what I offer to myself and others.

What is my greatest fear? Sharks and other animals in the water that sometimes mistake people as a snack.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I flip people off in traffic…sometimes—that’s all I have to say about that.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Dolly Parton, for over six decades she has made herself relevant as a storyteller on nearly every media platform.

What is my greatest extravagance? Food, a well prepared thoughtful meal, dessert or drink.

On what occasion would I lie? It’s easier to remember the truth but as a kid I often lied and took the role of the “fall guy” in my family just to expedite the interrogation and investigation of our parents—there were five girls and the oldest three were “challenging.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? It’s not always easy being the tip of the spear when it comes to a good idea, it can be lonely when you create new pathways of thinking.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? As Co-host and Producer of a live morning show on an ABC affiliate. A small group of us built a well-liked show from the ground-up. The show went on to be on the air for more than a decade and a half.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I’d like to be taller. Funny story; when I was in high school, I wanted to be taller because to play college volleyball and be competitive, it just seemed like a good idea. So, I took up praying fervently to please make me two inches taller. Then one day, after praying, I opened my eyes and looked down at my feet…I had on two- and half-inch heels— it was like God said “yes Peggy, and I’ll give you an extra half inch,” I could not help but laugh and accept the height I am.

What is my greatest achievement in work? To see my three sons doing what they like and are naturally designed to offer this world.

Where would I most like to live? At a beach or on the side of a hill in a cave where I can smell the beach or both.

What is my most treasured possession? My vehicle, the ability to adventure anywhere I can drive is a freedom I greatly treasure.

What is my most marked characteristic? Perseverance

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The river that runs the length of the Olympics and Cascade mountains What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? A little “hole in the wall” called Krain Corner that’s been around for over a century.

What books influenced my life and how? Captain Underpants—because it was the book series that hooked my kids on reading and catapulted them into the world of imagination.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? My entire YouTube song list which is made up from about everything from country, pop to the classic blues and old hymns.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? “Anne” of Green Gables—I identify with her and appreciate her spirit.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? The first person who comes to mind is my oldest son who currently is serving his fifth tour in a war zone. If I think beyond the initial thought, there are dozens and I could easily add my two other children who do amazing things in this world as well. But my oldest son faces his mortality on a survival level everyday so that his brothers, myself and others may continue to know we are protected by those who believe in the true American way of life.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? On Golden Pond

What role play stories in my life and work? Life is a constant unfolding of stories. I choose to be a storyteller because when a story is told well, it values a life’s contribution to mankind.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ to me? I am in charge of the narrative—my choices create the tapestry of my life.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I would have to say my sister…when I was willing to let go of my dreams, she reminded me of why it’s worth the journey.

Which people or companies would I like to work with? Dolly Parton, Paramount Pictures, BBC, Kelly Ripa, Matt Damon, Lady Gaga, Sandra Bullock, Denzel Washington

What project am I looking forward to work on? Like many storytellers I have a few projects in the works but the one that is currently in production based on a true story “The Island Calls” will begin filming in the Spring/Summer of 2023. This is a project that has been in the works for over two decades.
