The Heroine’s Journey of Vicky Markolefa

What ignited your passion for this work?

Travelling with my father since adolescence spurred my curiocity for the world, cultures, people. The camera was a tool to interpret these stimuli into something I could grasp. Hence, I dedicated a large portion of my life’s work to camera work and visual storytelling.

What was your biggest breakthrough moment?

The moment I realized that I am not defined by my work. It’s the other way round.

What’s the greatest challenge you’ve overcome?

Loosing everything and starting over, again.

When did you feel most alive in your work?

Working on issues I am genuinely interested in.

Which story, book, or film shaped your path?

None in particular, yet the work of Hermann Hesse stands out.

Who’s your hero/heroine (fiction or real life)? (max 3)

Not a hero, a teacher: Jiddhu Krisnamurthi

How do stories fuel your creative process?

Stories work like mirrors and windows. They reflect familiar experiences while opening views into realities beyond our own.

What does “You are the storyteller of your life” mean to you?

Oh, this duality. We are both subjects and authors. Life happens, yet how it matters is the story we choose to tell—our agency lives in that choice.

Who’s been your greatest champion/collaborator?

Nature.

What does “Passion Never Retires” mean to you?

It’s about refusing to let the world define your energy or purpose. Yet, vitality comes when the “fire” energizes us, not when it consumes us.

Where can people experience your work now?

In documentary festivals and online.
