The Heroine’s Journey of Maria Buemi

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

The freedom to do what I want, the freedom to express myself the way I want to. My work is there and shows what I am.

What is my idea of happiness?

I think happiness consists of little moments in life. To me, the concept of happiness itself remains an ideal though.

What is my greatest fear?

Diseases, quakes, wars.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

Shyness. It can affect your life.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?

My masters, Giuseppe Puglisi and Piero Zuccaro. I admire them not only as artists, but also the way they are as people.

What is my greatest extravagance?

Once in a blue moon I go to bed early in the night.

On what occasion would I lie?

I do not like lies. When I cannot tell the truth, I prefer to be silent rather than lie. On this regard, a quotation ascribed to Mark Twain comes to my mind: “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

Being asked to talk about it.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

When I was chosen by it.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

Probably many things, but I would be someone else.

What is my greatest achievement in work?

The one which has to come.

Where would I most like to live?

I lived in London for one year. It was such an experience. I have visited England many times over the years, seen beautiful places impressing me so much, known nice people and made some of my closest friends ever. Definitely I would live half a year in Italy and half a year in England. That would be great.

What is my most treasured possession?

My family, my closest friends, the people I love, the people I care about.

What is my most marked characteristic?

Loyalty.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?

I live in Sicily in a small village surrounded by nature at the foot of Mount Etna. From my place I have a wonderful view of both the volcano and the sea, which I find very inspirational.

What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?

I don’t have one in particular. I enjoy to go for a pizza and a drink with my friends to any place with a soft and cosy atmosphere.

What books influenced my life and how?

I think reading in general helps you increasing your knowledge, growing mentally, forming new ideas but, personally, don’t think that just one or some books in particular have influenced my life so far. It’s the whole you get and elaborate from a variety of readings which can make the difference in the way you see aspects of your life. However, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, The Citadel by A. J. Cronin , Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, I Viceré by Federico De Roberto, Martin Eden by Jack London are some books I enjoyed.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day?

Thinking about right that day I would probably listen to Signore delle cime by Giuseppe (Bepi) de Marzi.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?

None.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?

All those who selflessly spend their lives to help others, those who risk their lives to save the lives of others.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?

The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin.

What role plays art in my life and work?

Art plays an essential role in my life and my work. It’s something as necessary as all vital activities, something an artist cannot live without.

What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ mean to me?

Keep working and doing what you believe in. It’s a continuous challenge.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?

It was my sister.

Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020?

Galleries in Italy and abroad.

Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career would i love to meet in 2020?

Artists, gallerists, art curators to share feelings and motivations for projects with.

What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on?

I am looking forward to a solo exhibition, which project I am already working on.

Where can you see me or my work in 2020?

You can see my works on my website, on socials such as Facebook and Instagram, in galleries in Sicily such as Quam in Scicli (Ragusa), run by the gallerist and art curator Antonio Sarnari and Il Quadrifoglio in Ortigia, (Siracusa), run by the gallerist Mario Cucè.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?

They mean that artists work with great passion until they pass away.
