The Heroine’s Journey of Maureen Gerby

What is the best thing that I love about my work ?
The possibilities, the creativity, using my imagination without borders or barriers… There are so many things I love about my work but I think the best is the magic of creation. Being a writer allows me to express myself and create everything I want without any limits.

What is my idea of happiness?
Happiness is not an idea, it’s a part of me, a part of who I am today. Because, happiness is in everything, each person we meet and each moment we live, even the hardest ones.
I am happy when I write fluently (when words flow) – listening to music and in front of a landscape that I love. Or when I watch a good TV show with my cat sleeping beside me. Or when I spend time with people I love.

What is my greatest fear?
To hurt someone especially my loved ones.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
My lack of confidence and my illegitimacy syndrome. Because of that, I sometimes stop myself from moving forward and let my limiting beliefs build walls around me.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?
J.K. Rowlings, Amélie Nothomb, Stephen King

What is my greatest extravagance?
I have no morning routine

😅

. More seriously: I can stay still without doing anything, just contemplating nature or my horse, listening to music or simply birds, wind or water.

On what occasion would I lie?
I can lie to avoid hurting someone and especially those I love.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
All administrative aspects! As an independent writer, we don’t know all the procedures, declarations or registrations. Thankfully, there is a lot of mutual assistance between writers.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
When I held my first book in my hands.
I started to write this story quite a long time ago but, because of my lack of self-confidence, I wasn’t ready to publish it. My close family and friends finally convinced me, and I am so grateful to them, because, ever since I have never stopped writing.

If I could, what would I change about myself?
I’d take away my illegitimacy syndrome and do everything without doubt or fear.

What is my greatest achievement in work?
Publishing my first book despite my fears because now every day is an adventure where I freely express my creativity and imagination and which can easily finish in a page of a new story.

Where would I most like to live?
My dream home is somewhere between forest and sea with sun and warm temperatures.

What is my most treasured possession?
Myself, my life. It may seem narcissistic but I believe our life is the only thing we truly possess from our birth to our death. It’s a pretty good reason for being self-caring and listening to oneself.

What is my most marked characteristic?
My hypersensitivity which is one of my superpowers.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
Everywhere! I am constantly inspired whenever and wherever I am. There is something magical in this.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
On my couch watching a good TV show near to my cat or on my terrace.

🤓

What books influenced my life and how?
Surprisingly, I wasn’t a good reader. I hated long novels and yet I took a literature option. But now, and for some time, I have long periods when I read a lot. Sometimes I devour books and other times I only read webtoons.
Despite everything, some novels really marked me: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, His dark materials by Philip Pullman, « L’homme qui Voulait être heureux » by Laurent Gounelle, The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield, « Le rouge et le noir » by Stendhal. And so many more which made me laugh or cry. I can’t mention all of them.

You can only die once. What music would I listen on my last day?
Music is too important for me to choose only one. Music is a huge part of my life; it accompanies me daily. I have created many playlists which I continue to feed every time a piece of music touches me or makes me want to dance.
On my last day, I would like to listen to a random selection of my playlists and new songs I may not know because I love making new discoveries.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?Buffy Summers (Buffy, the vampire slayer), Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars, TV Show), Kim Hye-rin (She was pretty, Kdrama), Merida (Brave, Disney), Vaiana (Vaiana, Disney).

Who is my heroes or heroines in real life?
My grand-mothers who are incredibly strong women. They are true role models for me.
My loving parents. By their choices and how they decided to live, they showed and taught my brother, my sister and myself that love is always the answer, that if there is respect and love, everything is possible.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime?

What role play stories in my life and work?
A huge place, maybe the first. Stories have accompanied me since my childwood and almost every day.

What do the words “You are the storyteller of your own life” to me?
We are the creators of our own lives. Each day is a new blank page that we are free to fill out as we wish. We have the power to set the tone and direction we want. That is so magical.
